"Irises" by Julie Riker

24"x24"
oil on canvas

I have hundreds of irises in my yard and started this painting when they were blooming in the spring.   Originally I just had painted the pitcher with the flowers in it but always felt it was off balance, so last week I added the flower on the table which really helped to complete the piece.

This painting, along with 4 other paintings of mine,  will be hanging in Gallerie 13 for the month of January as part of the Featured New Artists show.

Just the Beginnings, by Amy Lindenberger

Some of you may remember a series of posts I made in February and March of this year, regarding an experimental piece I was working on involving oriental "masa" paper, soaked in water and creased, then flattened and painted with watercolor, with detail later added with colored pencil. That particular piece, when completed, was of some peonies, and I eventually titled it "Peony Dreams". I'm happy to say that it sold at Lyn O'Neal's Art and Soul Gallery in Lemoyne, in the early summer.
The two shown above have been started in the same method using the masa paper. The top image I hope to turn into a winter woods scene based on some photos I have taken of the woods along the turnpike between PA and OH, highlighting the young beech trees which keep their leaves throughout the winter, though sometimes those leaves become very pale and present almost an "albino" appearance. The second image I have already begun to add a bit of detail to, indicating the form of some of my hydrangeas. I'll keep you posted as they progress!

A Continuation of my series of Watercolor Studies of
North American Trout Species. I find the color variations
on the Cutthroat species especially interesting.

This species markings are vary different for the ones living in a lake environment,
compared  to the wild stream version. The lake version is
Mashed Potatoes to the Stream Version of Broccoli, Carrots and  Beets.
So stream version it is!

SHADES OF AMETHYST
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Shades of Amethyst'
Oil   24 x 30

When I was growing up, my mom had this really impressive
amethyst crystal vase that she kept up on the mantlepiece.  Every
Spring, it was full of her gorgeous lilacs, and the whole house
was permeated with their wonderful scent.
My mother had such a joy for life...and she savored every single
moment.  I hope there are lots and lots of lilacs up there in heaven.

This painting will be on exhibit at Gallerie 13 during the month of
January 2011 as part of the 'New Artists Exhibit' that will show
the work of artists who have joined the gallery in the past year.

Day 69

We're having a beautiful day here, lots of sunshine and blue skies.
You could almost fool yourself into thinking it is early Spring
until you walk outside and feel the temperatures!  No doubt
about it, it's definitely Winter here in PA.  Thought it would be
nice to paint this little sunlit pansy to brighten the day.  Something
to continue the illusion that it's a little bit warmer outside than
it really is...

Fuel Tanks, 5 x7, by Ron Donoughe

Sometimes I see things hundreds of times before I do a painting of it. I think of it as a visual gestation period. Twenty years ago I would have never considered these fuel tanks as possible subject matter. So what changed? It's hard to say. I think an artist warms up to the environment and an idea slowly emerges. This small study may never be more than it is, but it is a document of yesterday, December 28, 2010.

Dream Big - Pheasant Field Willow by Daily Painter of Pennsylvania Mary Beth Brath

The Willow at the Pheasant Field Inn Bed & Breakfast by Mary Beth Brath
16x12" Acrylic on Canvas

I have only taken 1 painting class. It was a plein air class at the Mechanicsburg Arts Center. Our class visited this B&B a few times during the 6 week session. The Willows were mesmerizing. I took several photos for later use. This painting was started inside the Arts Center during class on a very rainy day. By the end of that days' session, the instructor told me it resembled a palm tree and she was right. I was not very happy, but determined to figure out how to paint a willow. This was re-worked in my home studio over the next month and is now one of my favorites.

We all have challenges to overcome. Don't let the challenges become excuses. When your passion is strong, you will find a way to overcome everything that stands in the way of your dream. The dream needs to be bigger than the challenge. Set goals and go for it. Take some time over the next week to plan out your next year, DREAM BIG and work hard!

"Untitled" Roses in Pastel by Tatiana Myers

"Untitled" Roses in Pastel by Tatiana Myers
11 x 11" on Pastelmat.

This work was on hold for the last 3 weeks, because of online classes I was taking what didn't give me much time left. It was supposed to be another Oil pastel painting, but then I decided to give a try to soft pastels and even some pen-pastels. This is what i ended up with. I like the painting, I'm not sure if I like the photo of it I took. Perhaps I need to try harder. Mean while it is later and time to celebrate another finished work with some hot chocolate!

but is amiable, quite

the opposite of you

it’s merely a painting

I Can Do It - watercolor portrait by Kathy Michels

Watercolor portrait of another little ballerina. I am still working on the portraits of my young ballerinas. The intensity continues - this little one is just concentrating so hard. I think I am enjoying painting this age group because of all the facial expressions I captured during my photo shoot. Her little chest is puffed out and she is just so into watching her little classmates as she prepares for her turn.

Company Houses, 16 x 20, by Ron Donoughe

Just recently I discovered some photos that were taken in the early 1900's of Pittsburgh neighborhoods. The image I used for this painting was taken January 25, 1918. These photos have inspired me to do a series of paintings about what Pittsburgh looked and felt like about 100 years ago. I'm using an extremely limited palette, two or three colors. The idea is to give these photos a new life that can communicate the region's industrial history. But more importantly, this series is about the people that labored to create the world's steel capital.

Watercolor ~ Debi Watson ~ The Kiss

This is a new watercolor painting that won First Place Teachers in the Student Teacher Show at the York Art Association. The scene was from photographs I had taken by West Chester University. I love painting small towns and never realized that would include so many cars....
Also: I just posted a new how to paint video on you tube - as much information about painting as I could possibly pack in six minutes of time. Enjoy, and Happy Holidays!

Musically Inclined Series (Mozart) Musical Motif Watercolors by Pennsylvania Daily Painter Bertie Brown - Art is Instrumental

Musically Inclined/Mozart

original musical motif watercolor/Mozart: 11"w x 14"h

Mozart, Sophie and Me

Sophie came dandied

And dressed up today

She had an appointment

And couldn’t stay late

We listened to classics

We’d had enough pop

It makes us much smarter

We’ve read that a lot....

Suddenly we heard it

A clarinet was sailing

On tumbling rolling seas

Of high and so-low notes

With others in between

The accompanying horns in A

Were wailing right along

Fearsome parts to play

But they sounded strong...

Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto

Got us in the groove

We grabbed up our paints

Our creativity on the move

We had work to do

In our creative arts room..

Sunflowers for my secret sister by Linda Young

Sunflowers for my secret sister
4 x 6"
Watercolor by artist Linda Young

Sunflowers turn to follow the sun. Their open faces symbolize the sun itself, conveying warmth and happiness, adoration and longevity.
This small painting was created especially for my secret sister.  At my church at the beginning of the year, our fellowship group exchanges names to get a secret sister for that year.  On a sheet of paper, they find out what our hobbies are, our favorite colors, magazines we like and our favorite flowers among many other things.  Then, during the year we send cards, give inexpensive gifts if we want to, celebrate their birthdays and anniversaries and other special occasions; all sent anonymously.

My secret sister said she loves to decorate and her favorite flower is the sunflower.  Tonight, I painted one for her and tomorrow around noon, she'll find out who her "secret sister" is.  I hope she likes these sunflowers which will be titled in her name tomorrow when I get back online again.

The person who had my name this year gave me all kinds of new art and drawing supplies.  I'll find out who she is tomorrow too.

Musical Mystery

A new thing to do

When you’re bored or feelin’ blue

Let a cloth freely drop

Right over the top

Of a still life gone stale

Or one that just failed

And let a painting begin

Using paint thick and thin

Till a theme comes alive

An idea starts to thrive

It’s surprising what you find

Hidden behind time..

Pearls and Clam shell with landscape watercolor by Linda Young

"The Jolly Clam" by Linda Young
6" x 8"
Watercolor on 140# Arches CP

This is December's painting challenge for the PADT (paint and draw together) blog hosted by Lela Stankovic.  She provides the photo, we artists accept (or deny) the challenge.  Because of the complexity of this challenge she gave us a month to get it done.  When I was nearing the end of this painting, the pearls were the last things to get detailed.  However, prior to that part they were very white and looked like they were laughing!  From the time I saw those toothy pearly whites I knew I'd be naming this "The Jolly Clam".

Vacant Lot, 36 x 48, by Ron Donoughe

I did the little 9 x 12 inch study, top, as a demo for my class at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. It worked well enough for me to enlarge the image to a 36 x 48 canvas. The idea for the painting is how some of the neighborhood row houses get demolished and leave a vacant lot. The empty space reminds me of a missing tooth. The houses were designed and built as joined units and you can see there are no windows on the side. This painting isn't finished yet but it shows how the study can be used as a source for a larger, more finished painting.

Dog portrait in watercolor by Linda Young

"Mr. Bean"
9" x 11-1/4" Watercolor painting
by Linda Young

This is a commissioned portrait of a beagle named "Mr. Bean" who got his name from the tiny spot on the top of his head that looked like a little bean.  The owner of this dog asked me to do this painting for him to give to his wife for a Christmas present.  This past summer, Mr. Bean had reached a very nice old age and is no longer with them today.  In many of their reference photos of Mr. Bean, the family had smiles on their faces as they socialized, touched and held him. I hope the painting of Mr. Bean will bring happy memories for them in the future.

Autumn Suite - four related compositions by David Bottini, paintings 'for Gabriel'

Working toward completing my part of a juried 3 artist exhibit coming soon in Providence, RI. The exhibit is titled "Intimate Spaces" - this group (and 7 other paintings) will be included.

Set out to create a group of paintings that interact as compositions as well as being a thematic series. Each painting can stand alone as an independent piece - but I like the synergy of the suite.
