Gazebo Gazing

It’s a Good Thing
Lobster buoys afloat
As art dotting coves and boats
Decorating New England’s coast
With more beauty than one state can boast
And subdued northern light
Embracing my favorite sights
The rumbling, tumbling tides
Enveloping my sighs
Hushing my faithless whys.....

POPPY!
Morning light
Sunshine bright
My first Poppy
This spring in sight!
Orange lace
Pretty face
Gazing high
To friendly skies
On one long leg
It pops about
Calling her ‘buds’
To come on out!

The Buoys of Bearskin Neck
original: 13 1/2"w x 10 1/2"h
Rockport Fever
Sophie and I
Are planning a trip
To Gloucester and Rockport
And, yes, Bearskin Neck
We’ll gaze at the ocean
Climb over the rocks
Paint Motif Number One
At the edge of the docks
We’ll dip our big toe
In the cold ocean water
Go swimming???
Are you kidding
We’d need to be hotter
We’ll head to Pigeon Cove
Walk the breakwater high above
Then buy some fresh lobster
At the Co-op down below
With more things to do
More scenes to be viewed
We’ll need much more time
Than the plan we designed
So we’re savin’ our pennies
Our nickels and dimes
(We know it’s not much
But we’re tryin’ to rhyme)
For our piece of the Rock
Or a spot on the dock
Of Rockport’s scenic town
The best place we have found......

Lobster buoys afloat
As art dotting coves and boats
Decorating New England’s coast
With quirky colors its fishermen boast
And sublime northern light
Envelopes the sights
While dancing on tides
That toss those floats
From side to side
Cormorants and gulls line up on the rocks
By the boats, or the docks
As they noisily wait
For some leftover bait
Granite boulders edge the shores
Firm foundations that endure
An applauding boisterous sea
BRAVO!
What a glorious symphony!

original drawing on gessoed music manuscript: 9"w x 12"h
A View From the High C’s
Is where I’ll be
With sketchbook in hand
Though it’s not what I planned
As I once took my place
In the second horn space
Or I played in the band
Or a show
With the pit crew way below...
But this view’s not so bad
There’s no stress to be had
Here in the Fulton’s lofty lairs
Above the balcony
And second stairs
Now the music that surrounds
These halls and abounds
Gives my drawings their sound
And I’m glad just to see
The view from the high C’s...

original drawing on gessoed music manuscript: 9 1/2"w x 12 1/2"h
Background Music
Is what you see
If you look closely
At this drawing of me
But the music I hear
In my mind’s ear
Has its own unique
And distinctive beat
With far away melodies
Following distant harmonies
That conjure up longings
And desires so haunting...
These are the songs
My people pass along
Mystical songs
From a time now long gone...

These lilies are starting to come up in our garden. They are beautiful and wonderfully fragrant when in full bloom. I do not, however, know the name of this variety of lily and would appreciate it if someone would enlighten me.

Orange Blaze Poppy Craze!
Sophie and I are ecstatic and delighted
We’ve made a discovery
And we’re so excited
Our poppies are budding
Poking up from their beds
With fuzzy green heads
And we just can’t wait
For a plein air painting date
When they pop out of their skins
And we settle in
For a quick painting session
As we compose our impressions...
Petticoats dancing
Leggy stems prancing
Blue centers waving
Orange petals blazing.....
We’ve gotta be greedy
With our time and be speedy
Cause Poppies don’t last
But a day and a half!
