This little scene was from the B&B we
stayed in when in Great Barrington, MA.
It had been cold and snowy. Here is what
I like...you have this wonderful still life
and yet out the window is a winter scene.
Its like two separate paintings in one!

Below is the finished painting I used as part
of my glass painting demo...I set up a still life
trying to show clear glass and colored glass.
The image is 9"x13"

There is still room in my classes... It is a very
relaxed atmosphere where everyone works
on their own subject. I demo and give hands
on help. Held in Lititz, PA

Hawley Farm by Rodrica Tilley

Susquehanna County farm land is marginal, at best, and only the cleverest and hardest working farmers make their farms prosper in this northern, hilly section of our state. This traditional dairy farm has branched out into retail meats and uses natural and sustainable practices to raise animals & crops.

The picturesque quality to the agricultural lands here is top notch. On this partially overcast winter's day only one young cow (known as a heiffer, until it gives birth-freshens) was out grazing on a bit of exposed pasture.

I love tomatoes fresh from my garden, and during
the winter I buy these 'vine ripened' hothouse
tomatoes because they are the closest thing I can
find to the real deal. The other three tomatoes that
were connected to this vine became a delicious
supper of grilled provelone and tomato sandwiches
last night...leaving this little guy all by himself.

This is about as far as I moved with this work during my demo session at Art and Soul Gallery. You can see what a difference in light and color giving Oil Pastel to painting compare to original underpainting, or even compare to the photo reference. I feel like it bringing painting to life every time when I touch a board. There is a nothing like this glow of Oil Pastel. This is one of the reasons why I love it so much.

A regular customer wanted this grouper for a present. It adds to my growing Saltwater Sports Fish of the East Coast. It is interesting that a Gag Grouper is the common grouper found on the menu, when you order grouper. Wonder how it got its name 'gag'?

Boiling Springs PA is one of the most picturesque locations in all of Pennsylvania! My family and I love to sit along Children's Lake. Last summer we even took our canoes out on the water. It is crystal clear and you can watch huge trout and other fish swimming right next to your boat. Although this is located in South Central PA, I am very strongly reminded of the amazing New Hope - Pennsylvania Impressionists while I plein air paint around the lake. The house in this post is located right across the street from the lake.

When working with pastels, I use various types of surfaces such as Canson universal sketchbook paper, Canson Mi-Teintes paper, Wallis Sanded Pastel Papers and Ampersand pastelbord, all mostly white.

The soft pastels I use are from Sennelier, Unison, and Diane Townsend. I use very little fixative if any on my pastel paintings, preferring to roll the finished pastel with a hard rubber brayer and newsprint to take up any excess pastel dust.

Quote from Robert Henri, "The most vital things in the look of a landscape endure only for a moment. Work should be done from memory; memory of that vital moment".

GLIMPSE OF GOLD by Claire Beadon Carnell

"Glimpse of Gold"

I was in a hurry one morning, on my way into
Carlisle for an appointment when I saw these
sugar maples in all of their golden glory. All I
could think about was that I hoped I could get
a picture of them on my way home, and I
prayed the whole time I was in the doctor's
office that when I got back to the scene the
light would be the same.

I was lucky on two counts - I always carry
my camera with me, and my appointment
was very short so I was able to get some
great photos with the light just as I had wanted.
This is the first of two paintings that I hope
to do from that experience.

I am in the middle of a series of Horse Portraits for a Client. It is very detailed

and a new subject for me. Before I went crazy, I took a break to paint a quick little miniature this morning.

It is of one of my favorite shore birds- a Black-Tailed Godwit found in The Netherlands. I took this photo a few hours from where my wife and I lived on an Ex-Pat assignment a few years ago.

Round Barn View from Hauser Winery, a Plein Air Painting by Amy Lindenberger

As you can probably tell, this plein air piece is the same view as the one in the miniature I posted yesterday. This piece is a bit bigger than that one -- probably about 6" x 8". (It shows up a little too contrasty, at least on my computer screen, but you get the general idea.) It definitely met the criteria I had set up for myself: work quickly, totally on-site, skip the detail. I'm still learning to handle the materials, but I'm having a lot of fun!

This painting is representing a rare natural phenomena (well, not so rare in Pennsylvania!) of freezing rain covering my favorite bush of climbing roses.For those of you, who wander, what happened to the rose bush - no, it wasn't hurt and still bringing me those pretty red flowers year after year.

Round Barn View from Hauser Winery - a Colored Pencil Miniature by Amy Lindenberger

I was interested to read Linda Young's post the other day about her experiments using illustration board. Like most artists, I have my preferred scale, methods of working and working surfaces. Fearing that I was getting into too much of a rut, in 2008 I began setting up a variety of challenges for myself. Since most of my work is very research-oriented and labor intensive, I decided I needed to learn to do the opposite: work on-site and very quickly. So I was thrilled when the opportunity arose to try my hand at plein air painting with a group during the Gettysburg Fringe Festival. I've also been working on using different surfaces. While I normally work on museum board, I've recently done a few colored pencil pieces on Gessobord and Aquabord -- both surfaces are quite rough and a real struggle for me. A third challenge was to change my scale; I normally work very large -- even 16" x 20" is very small for me. So after reading about some artists who focus on painting miniatures, I decided I'd try my hand at that. This piece measures about 3" x 4 1/2". I worked from a photo I had taken when I was out at the Hauser Winery for this past summer's Gettysburg Fringe Festival Plein Air event. Tomorrow I'll post the plein air version I did of the same scene (IF I can find the file, that is!)
