"Foggy Morning Buck" Colored Pencil by Charlotte Yealey

While drawing this, I focused on creating a foggy morning which required less application of color with my pencils. I feel it is important to create the mood but it is something I have to practice.

I Will Remember You

I Will Remember You
by Deborah Nell
15"x11" watermedia on Yupo paper
I recently went on a short term missions trip to Nicaragua. It will not be my last. I loved the people of Nicaragua. They have so little in terms of material wealth, yet are so rich in joy and gratitude. I took lots of pictures while I was there. This is a painting of a boy at one of the many outreaches we did while there. I don't normally paint faces but I had to make an exception. When I returned home from my trip I had lots of wonderful memories and wanted to try and capture some of the many faces I will not forget from Nicaragua.

Strip Doors, 12x16, oil on linen, Ron Donoughe

The morning light yesterday cut a blazing path across these shadowed doors in the Strip District. It reminded me of a Franz Kline painting. He used huge brush strokes to create dynamic impact. There is one in the Carnegie Museum of Art that is just awesome. I kind of imagined this scene as a Kline painting done with just a few brush strokes.

Burton Windsor Road by Daily Painter of Pennsylvania Mary Beth Brath

Burton Windsor Road
8x10" Acrylic on Board
Sold through the Vancura Gallery in Middlefield Ohio

This is the other painting that sold last month in Ohio. Burton Windsor Road in Geauga County Ohio is one of my favorite locations to explore. Most residents on this road are Amish. The road leads to one of the most quaint little towns in the county - Burton Ohio. The Vancura Gallery is a few miles down the road behind those distant trees.

Snow and Trees - It Must Be Winter

I have a series of winter scenes coming off easel. Here is the first, well, actually, the third. The first two sold before the paint was dry. That's what I call "gratifying."

What a surprise to wake up one morning to the sight of
snow flurries coming in over the mountain ridge.  The
flurries provided the perfect atmosphere for painting
this weathered old pine tree, which looked as if had already
withstood many a storm.

Musically Inclined Series (Bass) Musical Motif Watercolors by Pennsylvania Daily Painter Bertie Brown - Art is Instrumental

Musically Inclined / Bass

original musical motif watercolor / bass: 5"w x 7"h

A String Thing

The strings are such

A complicated section,

We say that and invoke

Our greatest affection,

With notes that soar

To the highest of heights

The violins bow frantically

Trying to get it just right!

And notes writ so low

The basses’ brows frown

As they bend down to bow

So low to the ground.

Always self important

No humility, not a trace

They sit right up front

And take up prime stage space.

The rest of the orchestra

Accepts this with grace

Their parts they play well..

They are quite exceptional,

And oh so professional...

THE DAY AFTER THANKSGIVING

'The Day After Thanksgiving'
Oil  9 x 12

Day 65

Thanksgiving day was pretty cold, raw, and rainy here
in Pennsylvania (a perfect day to stay in, eat yummy food
and nap!)  The day after, the wind kicked up and blew the
clouds away, leaving behind a pale light that bathed the
woods.

I have been refining my palette to get cleaner, fresher
color, and working to push the feeling of light in my work.
I was happy with what happened with this little
plein air.  What do you think?

Sugar plums and sleeping angels, watercolor by Linda Young

Sugar plums and sleeping angels
Christmas 2010
Watercolor 5 " x 7"

Kaysi and Abby both loved their toy-box which was totally filled with their stuffed friends.  Many times, the two of them would go to the box, stand up on their hind legs and with their mouth, pull out almost every toy inside it just to find the right one to play with. They made quite a mess.

A few of the toys in this painting are some of their favorites; like the teddy bears.  Each dog also loved to shred the Christmas presents to find a treat tucked inside the paper, or another new chewy or squeaky toy to play with.  They both seemed to love Christmas as much as little children do.  In this painting, Kaysi is the curious one with the cocked head in the foreground.

In the background, is Abby who could be found sleeping with her paw up on something and her head resting there too.  It looked uncomfortable; but Abby always seemed to be resting peacefully.

Last year at this time, I had two West Highland White Terrier "Girls" named, Abby and Kaysi.  Abby was with us when the holidays began; but she suddenly took ill soon after Christmas and she died on January 30th of this year. I couldn't save her; we did everything we could.

Kaysi still searches for her now and then and I think of her often.  Abby was a wonderful companion and her "sister" Kaysi is learning that same loving way.  This painting is dedicated to the wonderful memories of THE Sleeping Angel named "Abby".  God Bless your sweet heart, little girl.

Something rustic yet modern - Mark H Brown

I found this scale at an antique store and fell in love with the rusted patina and water stained face.  Rusted metal in soft cool light has a great feel, with the warm earthy brown shadows and bluish to purple soft glow of the northern light.  Of course the bright red cherries explode of the canvas being surrounded by the neutral palette of accompanying objects.  The wood face of the box has yet to exhaust it's interest to my eye.

Roof Tops, 22 x 30, oil, by Ron Donoughe

Lots of streets in Pittsburgh are stacked up on each other. Often the view from an alley is the roof tops of neighbors. In this painting of lower Lawrenceville, the late afternoon light created an interesting pattern of shadows. I especially liked the chimney shadow on the tan roof which became the focal point of the four houses. The distant hills created a nice illusion of depth to contrast the foreground.

The watercolor/colored pencil rendering above is the image on one of my new Christmas cards for 2010. It's part of my Windows of Gettysburg series and features two of the windows at the Dobbin House in Gettysburg. Since they decorate in more of a colonial style, using wreaths that feature fruits, I thought it was a good "Thanksgiving into Christmas" transition. I currently have 15 different Christmas card styles available, three of them featuring windows of some of the town's historic buildings. A Stately Entrance by Julie Riker

12x12
oil

I made arrangements for the Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters to paint out in the well tended gardens of the  PA Governor's Residence last week.   Even though most of the flowers had gone for the season, there was still a lot of beautiful color to see.  I particularly loved this shrub in the foreground with the firey red foliage.
It was a cold day to paint outside, but Tammy and the staff made us feel welcomed, even offering warm beverages and freshly baked cookies to warm us up.  I think everyone had a good time.

This adorable little four year old is getting ready for another ballet class. I loved the expression on her face. She was so intense and into the moment. She wanted so much to be able to dance. The drawing is finished and tomorrow I will be painting her in watercolor. This is a smaller piece - just 8" x 10".

BARE TREE IN THE GARDEN

'Bare Tree in the Garden'
Plein Air
Oil on linen    12 x 9

This week the Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters
had the wonderful opportunity of painting in the gardens
of the Pennsylvania Governor's residence.  The buildings
within the compound are beautiful, but my eye was drawn
to this scene of a bare tree standing starkly against a
backdrop of colorful fall foliage.

Although the day was raw and  cold, we were warmly
greeted by Tammy and other staff at the residence,
and were even invited to come inside to warm up with
some hot tea and freshly baked cookies.  Now that's
what I call some plein air roughin' it  :)

Along Water's Edge by Linda Young

Along Water's Edge
Watercolor 13-3/4 x 23”
 Linda Young, artist

This is another story from living "Out West" and the reasons I painted this landscape.

Off in the distance the line cabin was the only place one could go to if caught out in bad weather and find shelter. Sometimes, the fog came down between the hills and into the meadows; the mornings were so quiet and peaceful when that fog came rolling in! It would become so thick you could hardly see the cabins, outbuildings and barns let alone the horses in the pasture.

There were always fresh trout to be caught in the Mountain Rivers running through the pastures and in the well-made beaver ponds. Many times they were the main course for the meal. Sometimes, fried trout were the only things we had to eat.

I had a beautiful bay mare that I trained to ride when she was three years old; she was an American Quarter Horse named Miss Windee Breeze. In this painting, she would be the one running toward the others, snorting, whinnying and bucking because she realized she wasn’t with the herd. Before I got Windee, another horse was a big sorrel named “King” which I used to ride in parades and into the mountains. At one point, there were 15 horses in our string. King is the one looking toward the elk.

In the distance a bull elk whistles to stake claim to his territory and cows. An elk’s whistle teeth are the only American Ivory in the United States. (So I was told)

Well, the horses, cabins and other material things are probably all long gone by now; it has been thirty years since I’ve been here. Yet, the memories will always be a part of me.

Painting Number two of Western series.

AUTUMN PALETTE By Cecelia Lyden

oil on canvasboard
6x8

Julie Riker arranged for our plein aire group to paint at the Governor's mansion yesterday. We are planning to do a painting each season. The strong winds on Wednesday left many of the trees void of leaves and autumn color, but much of the shrubbery was still brilliant and contrasted beautifully with the bare branches of other shrubs.
The weather turned windy and cold and after 3 hours I began to shiver. Happily, the Governor's hostess, Tammy, had coffee and cookies right out of the oven to warm us up. We enjoyed them seated at a lovely banquet table, drinking out of china cups. Not a bad way to end a plein aire session.

"20th Maine Re-enactor" by Dianne Lorden

After having recently posted one of my re-enactor pastels, I remembered this one. I sold it two years ago, but thought I'd share it here on the DPP blog.
I spoke with this gentleman up by the Peace Light during an encampment on the Gettysburg National Military Park battlefield, and I was impressed by his passion. Just wanted to honor it in a portrait.

pastel portrait, Maria Kovalenko Leysens

A wonderful portrait session yesterday.
I have a ton of pastels and I take them, all of them,
when I go to these model sessions.  I don't need them all. (You knew that.)
So, I forced myself to use only a small selection of color for this one.
Painting was easier, not confusing or overwhelming,
 and I like what happened.
Pastel, 18 x 22 inch sanded paper.
