Day 38

A little bit of summer whimsy. The fireflies
have been magnificent this year, and I've been
watching them since they first appeared at the
beginning of June. From those observations, I just
sat down and painted what I remembered seeing.
What do you think?

Linda Benton McCloskey - Finally, Number 10 of 10 - Abstract on Canvas - 48 x 36 - "Stepping Back"

I'm late in posting my number 10 painting. My computer has been down for the past 3 days and we just got it back from repair. This painting is quite large as you can see - 48 x 36 - and is on canvas - mostly acrylic, but does have some charcoal. I've been busy painting since I will be having an exhibition at Gallery on Second in Harrisburg, PA. The reception is August 13th from 6 to 9. Stop in if you can.

"Are We Done Yet?" - Watercolor by Kathy Michels

I recently finished this 38" x 16" watercolor painting of these little ballerinas. I have always loved watching all the different forms of dance. The movement and stories the dancers tell are wonderful. When I started painting I couldn't help but wonder how amazing all the costumes would look in watercolor. I did a photo shoot with a class full of four year old ballerinas. Oh my, what fun. They were just so adorable and such a joy to watch. This painting portrays the end of the photo session. You see the question in their eyes "Are we done yet?".

Day 36

I was so happy to find this beautiful, ripe heirloom tomato
when I went out to the vegetable garden this morning.
This particular variety is called 'Mortgage Lifter', and
is up there as one of my favorites. It reminds me so much
of the tomatoes my mom grew when I was a child.

It was very difficult not to slice it up and have it for
lunch today, but since I was painting from life I had
to exert a little patience. Tonight this tomato is going
to be the star at our supper table!

Echinacea by Pennsylvania Watercolor Artist Linda Young

4 x 6" Watercolor
Echinacea
by Linda Young, artist

The coneflower had a rough start this spring when it met unfortunately with huge hail stones.  The storm literally broke the plant back to the ground.  However, with a little T.L.C., sunshine and rain this flower is now flourishing and producing a lot of flowers. The echinacea is really a healing plant...that healed itself to thrive again.

This painting can be purchased through my website, or at the upcoming Mount Gretna Outdoor Art Show.

Roosevelt House, 20 x 45, oil on canvas by Ron Donoughe

This is a painting I did in the Squirrel Hill section of Pittsburgh last summer. The woman reading, second house from left on stoop, shows the scale of these houses. She did not know I painted her in until later. Her husband commissioned the painting because they just love the kid-friendly street. I did it on location over a few days. And yes there were a lot of curious children.

As mentioned on the side bar, my painting, Pittsburgh Winter, won an award at the 100th Annual Associated Artists Exhibition held at the Carnegie Museum of Art. The AAP Annual is the longest running annual exhibition held in a major museum in the United States. I'll be talking about the painting this Sunday from 2:30-3:30 at the museum if you happen to be in town.

Morning tea by Pennsylvania watercolor artist Linda Young

"Morning Tea"
by Linda Young, artist
As I waited for my tea to brew this morning, I noticed the light was really beautiful and coming in the window hitting the cup, teapot and steam from the cup.  I thought it would make a nice little painting.  So, even though the tea got a little strong while I drew this, it was good regardless.

David Bottini, for Gabriel ... daily progress working through a few paintings.

Having a good week in the studio - largest piece on my easels is proving a pleasant challenge - building the layers and depth as the brilliant summer light dissolves the background and enhances the contrast of the middle and foreground shadows. Water is always a fun challenge - suggesting the flow, flicker, and translucency without loosing the gesture and brushwork.

Also made progress on a small canvas - the lush full summer saturation and glorious morning sun animating the layers of forest.

I will post again in a few days - hopefully one or two of my four in-process will be resolved : )

"A Sharp Right Turn." by Michael LeKites

Finally finished it. This completes the series of paintings on our right and freedom as Americans to protest. As I posted earlier, each of these paintings have a portion of one of the three statues that make up the Grant Memorial directly in front of the Capital. This particular painting depicts a team of horses pulling a cannon. The flag man is signaling an abrupt right turn to the team and the horses are in the midst of that turn. I am anxious to get started now on something different that involves the Renaissance period. This is Acrylic, 16x20.

3 New paintings underway from a recent trip to New Hope by David Bottini

Had a great two day trip to New Hope Pa, and Lambertville, NJ. Wandered in the wilting heat and managed to find some beautiful shaded scenes as subject.
Three pieces on the easels are underway - one (river) is from Lambertville, the birches vertical is from old sketches and photos of a trip to Flagstaff AZ., and the horizontal forest is from an earlier June wander along the Susquehanna. Three related themes will keep me busy for the next few weeks.

Another painting from my trip down to North Carolina
this past fourth of July. We were waiting for the water

Beaufort when I spotted this sailboat cruising between
the islands. I really enjoyed seeing the American flag waving
so proudly from the back of the sailboat.

Sheldon Reynolds Falls by Michael LeKites

One of the first of a series of water fall paintings.
I had actually completed a much smaller painting of this many years back. It sold immediately after displaying it in a local restaurant. I eventually repainted a larger version as a gift to our Pastor. So, perhaps you could call this a hand painted print of the first?
Acrylic. 22x28.

Linda Benton McCloskey - Number 9 of 10 - Watermedia on Paper "Green With Envy"

Believe it or not this is number 9 of 10! Only one more to go to complete my commitment of publishing 10 paintings in 10 days. This particular painting, Green with Envy, is another abstract watermedia on paper - framed and matted size 28 x 36. It was just accepted into the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society's (PWS) annual juried international exhibit to be held in Crary, PA (northwest Pennsylvania - I think near Erie).
I'm working on number 10 of 10 today and trying to complete - it's large (36 x 48) and on canvas and only the primary colors - red, blue, and yellow.....

These apples have been sitting on my countertop just beggin me to paint them in the basket they were sitting in; but my inspiration was to move them to the window sill for better light.

HEADING HOME
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Heading Home'
Oil 9 x 12

On the last night of our visit with our family in North
Carolina, I was sitting on the dock at my cousin's house
watching the play of color on the water and coastline
as the sun started to set.
I had my camera, and was hoping to capture some of
this amazing color when this little boat chugged in and
caught the last bright rays of the sun. As soon as I
saw the light hit the boat, I knew this was going to be
something I would want to paint.

I worked on this painting off and on during last two weeks. One more landscape of that very same Cove Creek with all it's mysteries. I used combination of watermedia and charcoal underpainting, mixed soft pastels and pencils and alcohol wash to finish this work. it was not the easiest one to paint and I think I have to do it better... next time, when I will try something similar. This will be my newest addition to my 12 x 12" landscape series (one of my favorite formats).

"All I Want for Christmas is...." - Acrylic Impressionistic Painting of Dog and Hershey Kiss by Pennsylvania Daily Painter Pat Koscienski

"All I Want For Christmas is...."
Mixed Media
6" x 6"
"All I Want For Christmas is...." was done for James Parker's blog Windows to the Words Art Challenge. The theme was to paint something we wanted for Christmas eg a diamond ring or new lap top computer, etc. I always like this doggie photo James had posted in a previous challenge. After giving some thought to what I really want for Christmas....love, everyone wants love (even dogs)....kisses, everyone wants kisses (even dogs)... Living so close to Hershey, Pa ...Hershey kisses came to mind quickly. I never realized, until I went to paint one, though, that the white paper tag reading "kisses" leans to the left to read kisses. Of course, I needed this to lean into the painting, so that is why it reads as a mirror image. Then, couldn't get the metallic glimmer in the red foil quite glimmery enough, so took the foil and paper off the kiss and collaged it to the painting and ate the chocolate. That's how easy an acrylic painting can turn into a mixed media painting.
This painting will be on exhibit the month of July at the Charley Krone Gallery located on the 2nd floor of the New Cumberland Library. This is one of 26 paintings for my "Animals, Birds, and Butterflies" Exhibit. I thought it would be interesting to gather and exhibit my animal paintings, whether they are the main subject of the painting, or just included in the painting. If in the area, stop in and visit the exhibit. Again, it is located on the 2nd floor of the New Cumberland Library, 1 Benjamin Plaza, New Cumberland, PA.If interested in purchasing, contact Pat at patsfineart@hotmail.com If interested in viewing more of my paintings, both abstract and representational, please visit my website at:

Would you all know

(If you do, say so)

What you possibly think

Could be in that drink

Is serving at noon?

It seems to me

That what I see

After drinking their fill

Of sunflower swill

Are tipsy bumble bees

And drunken butterflies

And finches on trips

Of lazy loops and dips

And even back flips

As they try to fly

In a straight bee-line

To their dives and hives...

Oh I have a hunch

It’s not Kool-Aid punch

That beckons this bunch

To come enjoy lunch!
