CHERRY TREE LANE An Original Pastel Painting by Clare Klaum

This is one of my newest creations.  I have admired these Cherry trees for several years, but always seemed to miss their peak bloom.  This year I caught them at just  the right time and took several photos. I chose this view that I took at 6pm with long shadows.  This is a Pastel painting on U-Art sanded paper. The image size is 15 1/2" x 23 1/2".  The framed size is 32 1/2" x 24 1/2".  It is double matted with acid free mats, UV glass and spacers in a Cherry wood frame.  It is currently in the Sales Gallery at Carlisle Arts Learning Center (CALC) and is available for purchase.

"OSPREY OF THE OBX" An Original Pastel Painting by Clare Klaum

Two years ago we were on vacation in the Outer Banks (OBX).  My daughter and I were on the boardwalk along the Sound looking for a spot to Plein Air paint.  As we turned a corner we saw this awesome Osprey perched on a dead tree.  I was only able to get 2 quick shots of it with my camera before it took off.  It had a fish in it talons on the leg behind the broken branch.  You could only see the tip of the head in my photo so I did not include it.  Had it been holding the fish in the talons showing I would have included it.  I have been wanting to paint this for quite some time and finally was able to do so.  This painting is 10 1/2"  x 15" on U-Art sanded paper.   It is double matted in an aged wood frame with UV glass.  It is available for sale.

"LADDIE" An Original Pastel painting by Clare Klaum

This painting is a commissioned Pet Portrait for my good friend Katysue.  She wanted to give this to her daughter for a surprise birthday gift.  His name is Laddie and she said he is such a sweet  and loving cat.  A true gentleman!  I was fortunate to have a wonderful photo that her daughter took to work from.  Her daughter was delightfully surprised and loved the painting!  That was my goal.  I always love to hear comments like that.  It makes what I do so worth while and fulfilling.

"TIGER LILLIES" An Original Pastel Painting by Clare Klaum

I painted these lilies from a photograph that I took in my garden.  These lilies were an Easter gift from my daughter a few years ago.  I had them for about 3 years, then the Bunnies ate them and they did not come back.   At least I still had the photo and now this painting to remember them.

GEORGIA & VIRGINIA (Commissioned Pet Portrait) An Original Pastel Painting by Clare Klaum

My client commissioned this Pet Portrait for a surprise Birthday gift for her husband.  She gave it to him this past weekend.   These beautiful dogs were a joy to paint.  I was told that Georgia (the black dog) is very bright but more reserved while Virginia just wants to have fun!

"RED TAILED HAWK (JUVENILE) An Original Pastel Painting by Clare Klaum

I was honored that my Painting of the "Red Tailed Hawk (Juvenile)" was juried into the Keystone National Works on Paper.  The opening reception is September 11 from 6pm to 8pm at the Art Center School & Galleries in Mechanicsburg.  The exhibit will run from September 11 till October 2.  This beautiful juvenile Red Tailed Hawk spent about 3 weeks around our yard last August.  I took about 100 photos of her.  She seemed quite comfortable with me getting very close to photograph her.  I knew she was a juvenile because Red Tailed Hawks do not acquire their red tails until their 2nd summer.  So she was born that Spring. I thought it quite possible that it was a female, because females are larger than males and she was very large. She did take out quite a few of our squirrels, chipmunks and a few birds.  Observing that was awesome and awful at the same time.  But so goes the cycle of life.  I named her Mariah because she came and went like the wind!  In this painting she was perched in our Dogwood tree just hanging out.  My husband and I spend a lot of time feeding and observing our backyard birds. It's become one of our favorite past times now that we are retired.

"COUNTRY GARDEN" An Original Pastel Painting by Clare Klaum

This painting was done day 2 of the Plein Air Camp Hill Festival.  A lovely couple, Linda and Dave, allowed me to paint in their gardens.  They live in an old Victorian house on the outskirts of Mechanicsburg and have spent many years cultivating and planting their gardens.  They love the primitive country look and their home and gardens reflect that.  This was an old outhouse that they converted into a storage shed.  This was the day that there was a deluge of rain in the afternoon.  Fortunately I was able to escape to their screened in sun porch to continue my painting.  I had to finish it at home the next morning as we had a reception for Sponsors and Artists at the Civic Club in Harrisburg Wednesday night.

SOLD/ "ELAINE'S PEACEFUL PLACE" An Original Pastel Painting by Clare Klaum

This was my first painting for the Plein Air Camp Hill Festival.  Tuesday was a lovely sunny day.  This beautiful garden was on the outskirts of Dillsburg at the home of Elaine and Al.  They built their home and all the gardens and trees on their property 40 some years ago.  They were such an amazing couple and I was so thankful to have such a beautiful place to paint.  Elaine planted this garden several years ago to be a walkway for the Groom and groomsman to walk on the other side of the Rhododendrons where her daughter's wedding was to take place.  They loved the painting and purchased it to be a lasting memory of this garden.

"GARDEN GAZEBO IN SPRING" An Original Pastel Painting by Clare Klaum

Thank you Cecelia for inviting us to paint in your neighbor's garden last week!  So many beautiful spots to pick from.  It's a shame it will just about be over by next week for the Plein Air Camp Hill Festival. Last week I spent Thursday and Friday afternoons on location on this painting for a few hours each and finished it at home yesterday.  It must be like a little bit of heaven to just sit in this beautiful garden and enjoy it's splendor.

"GOLDEN RETRIEVER" An Original Pastel Painting by Clare Klaum

This beautiful Golden Retriever was a joy to paint!  Several years ago I was at a paint out at the Governor's mansion and his dogs were romping around the gardens.  I took several pictures and hoped some day to paint one of them.  This painting is part of my Solo Exhibit at the Joseph T. Simpson Library on Walnut St in Mechanicsburg.  This exhibit features 14 original paintings for sale and 4 framed prints of other pet portraits that I have done.  This exhibit will be featured for the month of May.  Also this month I am the Featured Artist at Juice & Java in Windsor Park, Mechanicsburg.  There are 25 framed prints on exhibit and for sale.  This is a great place to get fruit smoothies, soups, sandwiches and salads!  Joe, the owner, has always been very supportive of local artists.
