HOUSE ON MARKET AND 24TH By Cecelia Lyden

oil on linen
8x10

After the horrendous storms on Thursday, the weather cleared up enough for some of us to venture outdoors to paint. It was still partly sunny/partly cloudy, but we forged on and met in Camp Hill's Willow Park. It's not much of a park, but there are beautiful homes and gardens that surround it. I set up across the street from this old "pinkish" colored house on the corner of Market and 24th Street. Of course the stone wall with the yellow flowers are what caught my eye.

Antique Auto Show - Watercolor by Kathy Michels

This was a fun little piece I finished a year ago. We went to the AACA show at the museum in Hershey. This singer caught my eye. I loved the beautiful blue and all the fun reflections from the cars and clothing and flowers nearby.

Glace's Sir Gallagher Pigdog by Thom Glace

Graphite on Paper. Old Drawing found again.
This drawing was done before I became a painting 4 1/2 years ago.
I was just playing around with a sketch pad, and drew a protrait of my pet
Englsh Bulldog- Sir Gallager. Dumb, but so pretty that you
just had to love him. I still miss him. Since he passed away,
I have had Great Danes, Great Pyranees Mountain Dogs
and - now we have a Newfoundland- Miquelon,
named after an island off the coast of Newfoundland.
Miguelon

It was fun finding a drawing I did years ago, before I really started to
spend time painting, and it broght back such wonderful memories.

"French View"
14x18 watercolor
Available at my Open House, May 7-8

This Saturday, April 30 I am exhibiting at
the Lewisburg Art Festival, held on Market St
in downtown Lewisburg, PA.  The first outdoor
show of my season.  10 to 5, rain or shine!

www.andysmithartist.com

Something different (for me, at least!)

My youngest daughter and her husband lost their happy, active -- and only 2 years old! -- springer spaniel, Molly, this past August to leukemia. (I don't know a lot about things like that, but they tell me this is very rare in such a young dog.) Knowing that I used to do portraits (though primarily human) for a living, my daughter asked if I might be able to create a composition they could hang to remember Molly by. It's approximately 12" x 16", done on dark gray Pastelmat in colored pencil. I was glad to be able to make something specifically for them, and presented it to them this past weekend when they were up to visit for the Easter holiday.

Steel Glow, 48 x 60, oil by Ron Donoughe

These dusty steel mills become really exciting when molten metal is poured. The flames illuminate surfaces while the yellow green lights pierce the smoke from the ceiling. Cool blue light from outside streams through dirty glass panels. This creates three distinct light sources and a visual poetry that you wouldn't expect from such a dangerous and enormous space.

"OBX Evening" by Dianne Lorden

OOooops! I messed up my prior posting effort while putting a title; I pressed Enter by mistake. Yikes! I can't figure out how to drop the title to a second line. Anyway, this drawing took me two weeks, working most days for an hour or two in the afternoon. It's' been a pleasure to return to colored pencil after not working in it for years. I'm enjoying the class - last day tomorrow! There are plenty of "mistakes" here and fixing them isn't like working with pastel, but it's a busy enough picture that it all sort of blends anyway.

Make It Squishy, watercolor by Linda Young

Make It Squishy
14 x 18 Watercolor on 140# Arches CP
Linda Young, artist
The painting was done of two young girls playing in the watery sand at Laurel Lake as the sun was setting one evening last Fall.  I remember how the wet sand felt in my own hands when I played with my grandkids and other youngsters, they told me just how to make those sand pies..."Just make it squishy"; so I did.

Watercolor by Kathy Michels

This was one of the first paintings I did nearly two years ago when I began painting seriously. I have always loved art and creating. When raising children some things are put on hold. When the last of our three boys ventured out on his own about five years ago I started to "dabble" in watercolors. I truly loved the medium and loved the ability to create. I then found a wonderful teacher and great friend. This painting was somewhat of a turning point that he had me paint during those first few weeks. I had to collect items that were about me personally. If I died tomorrow those who knew me should recognize this painting as being about things I enjoyed. I still think about that at times when I paint. When we paint we should paint with a fierce passion - paint like there is no tomorrow.

Winter Landscape - Mark H Brown

I had begun this piece before I left for Florida.  It was a beautiful winter sky morning, with the rays of light coming down over the entire valley.  I made up the snow and mountains to complement the sky, adding I think to the cool feeling of the painting.  It might be out of place with all the spring flowers coming up now, but I enjoyed the challenge of capturing the strong glow of light against the very neutral surrounding cloud mass.  I'm really enjoying these landscapes.  Thank you all for all your comments over the last year.  I appreciate your input and encouragement.  Happy painting!

Sophie and I

Are enjoying this fine weather

With temps in the 70’s

It couldn’t be better!

This sweet summer prelude

Has put us in the mood

For picnics at brunch

That last until lunch

Our silly girl talks

Become lazy long walks

Then quick jaunty jogs

In our sporty running togs

Return us home safe

Where nap-time awaits!

ON THE ROAD TO PENN STATE By Cecelia Lyden

oil on stretched canvas

11x14

This painting was done from a photo I took as we, my husband, daughter, and son-in-law were driving up to Penn State to watch my granddaughter and her Gator teammates play the Penn State lacrosse team. It was an early March day and there were remnants of snow still on the hills. Again, I just kept shooting photo after photo as we were moving along. The mountain scenery is beautiful and although there was not much sunshine, I was able to get a few decent photos.

SPRING AT LAST By Cecelia Lyden

oil on linen

11x14

It was windy and cool last Thursday for our paintout in Camp Hill's Siebert Park, but here was just enough sunshine to entice some of us to try. The borough park has lots of different trees, some of which had new spring green growth and blossoms. I like the winding, up and down roads and paths and I tried to capture the hilly inclines and and the dips in the terrain.

"Orchids in Ruby Glass" Oil 12 x 12" WIP by Tatiana Myers. Almost finished.

"Orchids in Ruby Glass" Oil 12 x 12" WIP.
One more update at the same very painting. I'm pretty sure that next one will be the final one. It is very close now, just need to put some more accents here and there and go with one more glaze over part of background and... i think I'm done with it.

Watercolor Studies of Indian 'Trout'

Indian Trout (Barilius bola)
Tibetan Snowtrout (Diptychus maculatus)

Transparent Watercolor on Crescent Mat Board
Each Image is 9" x 4.5".
To be matted & hand labeled by Smith Custom Framing
New Cumberland, PA.

Non-Professional Photographs

This is the finished double Watercolor Study of Indian Carp
that are named trout due to their resemblance to Trout.
As I mentioned, the idea of this Watercolor Study came to me through
an antique book on Game Fish of the World from the 1930's.
The book is a great inspiration- in fact the section on
Cuban Game Fish was written by Ernest Hemingway!
While I like the Indian Trout the best- I could not leave out
any fish named 'Tibetan Snowtrout'! My problem now is
what section to I put this on my web site? I have  Trout Pages
and other fish pages - which one?

One of the enjoyable aspects of these 2 Carp/Trout is that
even though they are only distantly related they have the
exact same color palette - making the dual painting
work that much better.

New landscape - Mark H Brown

Here is a new landscape.  It was a true battle in creating it,  from despair to pushing through and finally to success.  I love it!  I thank God for the ability to paint, because sometimes I'm reminded more acutely, just how dependent I am on His mercy and grace to be able to paint anything successful.  I love this time of evening.

GREEN PEARS
Original ACEO Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Green Pears'
Oil  2.5" x 3.5"

My very first ACEO!  Very different to be working at
this ultra-small size, but I have to admit I really enjoyed
working on this.  The hard part is that you must get up and
put some distance between yourself and the painting to
really get the whole picture of what is going on with the work,
just as you do with larger paintings.  I am already planning
my next one...

"Mauna Kea Sunset" By Debra Tritt Kreiger

"Mauna Kea Sunset" 11"x15" Watercolor on 140lb Arches paper

If you've never experienced a trip to the top of Mauna Kea on the Big Island in Hawaii it is well worth the trip. Seeing a sunset above the clouds was an awesome experience. It is a challenge to reproduce the effects of mother nature in all her glory. I can say I'm truly blessed to be able to try.

I've never painted strawberries before. I enjoyed this, but it was a challenge to get the right red colors and to include some of the detailed surface patterns without going overboard.

Lenten Rose by Julie Riker

8x8 oil

I have been busy lately working on a large architectural project so there has not been too much time for studio painting and blogging, but happily I found some time today to pick these lovely Heliobores from my garden, bring them in from the rain, and do a small painting of them.  Heliobores, also called Lenten Rose, are one of my favorite early spring flowers.

And It Rained On My Birthday This Year... Maria Kovalenko Leysens

I was invited to be part of a show at Gallery Sim, southside of Pittsburgh, opening on May 8th. The theme is "Capturing Carson" the main street of the area. I planned to do people, shoppers, commuters... but ended up with this image from a rainy day this past December.

Trout Run Preserve Mini by Mary Beth Brath

Trout Run Preserve by Mary Beth Brath

3 1/2 x 3 1/2" Mini on Acrylic Paper

I need a new digital camera. No matter how hard I try to get a clear and true to color image, this is what I get. Guess this one is a must see in person!

I painted this in my studio this week from a photo I took last summer at Trout Run Preserve in Cumberland County PA.

When is a trout not really a trout?

Indian Trout (Barilius bola)
Transparent Watercolor on Crescent Mat Board
Image Size: 9" x 4.5". First Part of a 2 Part Painting.

Non-Professional Photograph

While researching fish in India in an antique book my brother bought
me a couple of weeks ago, I came across a couple of 'trout'.
While they are closely related to the carp family, rather than
salmonid fishes (trout, char, salmon), due to their resemblance
to trout, their local name has trout in them. The second
fish in this painting will be the wonderfully named
Tibetan Snowtrout. I was fascinated  about the fish in India,
due to my travels there, while in International Marketing.
Due to my love of painting Trout Watercolor Studies,
these 'Pseudo-Trout' caught my eye.

"Oil Tanks Behind State Road" by Taryn Day

oil on gessoed paper
7"x5 and 3/4"

The sun finally decided to show his face today, and so I was determined to get outside to paint. I knew it was windy, but after a half hour of painting the winds picked up to gusts that were so strong I spent half the time holding everything in place. Still, it was great to get out. I found a whole new industrial area to explore and paint, so I'm completely happy right now.

Oriental Lily Bouquet by Linda Young

Oriental Lily Bouquet
Watercolor, 14 x 21

The rains have been steady here and outdoor gardening can't be done; so the next best thing is to stay indoors and have fun painting.  I began this painting three weeks ago when the aroma from them was really strong; unfortunately I'm allergic to their scent and had to move them out of my studio.  Challenging to paint without the subject in front of me, I still enjoyed their beauty.

Whew...finally got my new power cord for my laptop and
have the laptop up and running!  Our Plein Air Group, the
Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters went to Children's Lake in
Boiling Springs last Thursday.  It was the first sunny day we
had in many days, and it was wonderful to be out in the fresh
air painting and watching the fishermen fish in the 'Catch and
Release' section of the stream.  More pictures of the artists at

The Degas Project by Kathy Michels

I am so excited to be one of several members of DPP who are part of the "The Degas Project". This project is the combined efforts of York Art Association and Greater York Dance. Here are a couple of pics to show the wonderful costumes from the shoot. The students changed several times so we had a wonderful variety to pick from.

Thirty artists were invited to the dance studio and we had the opportunity to photograph these wonderful young dancers. We have three weeks to paint in our choice of medium.

On Mother's Day the dance studio will have the opening reception displaying our artwork. The dancers will also be performing. As it gets closer I will post address and times. If anyone is in the area please stop by and say hi. When my painting is complete I will post it here.
