Pittsburgh Winter, oil on linen, 48 x 68

This is a painting I did this past December when we were all excited about snow. And there have been years when the snow came and then quickly disappeared. That is why I was determined to do a large painting that depicted how Pittsburgh feels during a winter with snow. Little did anyone know that we were going to be buried in this stuff until April! With over 70 inches of snow so far this year I think it is time for spring.

A small 8 x 10 inch plein air study and a terrible photo of this alley were both used as source material. I find that even a rough oil sketch helps to reinforce what a potentially larger painting may have to offer. This particular area of Lawrenceville is tightly packed with buildings. By pushing the dark masses close to the top the viewer is forced to stay down near the alley. I think of it as an urban canyon painting. The light patches are used as elements that break up the space and also create the illusion of depth. The colors become less intense and the value of colors become closer as you move further back into the painting. It is a combination of linear and atmospheric perspective that takes the viewer up this snowy path.

SCATTERED (ACORN AND LEAF II)
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Scattered'
Oil 6 x 6

When I was a young girl, one of my favorite places
to be was up in the branches of a tree. It became my own
secret fortress, and I could climb high and view
the world from a whole new perspective.
To this day, I still revere the majesty of all trees, and
although I don't climb as much as I used to, I still
collect interesting leaves, branches, seeds and the
occasional empty nest.

This is the second of my study of some oak leaves
and acorns I collected last Fall.

Ghost Crabs

Harmless sand creatures

All top speed and scurry,

With quick stop and go features

As Porsche race cars in a hurry!

Playing tag, hide and go seek

All day long on the beach

With sand, sun, the sea....

And especially, me!

Now there may or may not

Be a crab in this lot

I really can’t tell

'Cause they hide out so well

Under any old shell...

Portrait Study #11 ~ child ~ Andy Smith, watercolors

5"x5" Original Watercolor Study

This is a study I did to work out the kinks for
the Mother and Child painting. The study is
totally different, I had not painted a portrait in
a while and needed to play with structure.

I am exhibiting in Hockessin, DE all this weekend

Colored Pencil/Watercolor Pencil experimental piece, Step 3, by Amy Lindenberger

This is actually going a little better than I had anticipated, and I "relearned" something I've used in other situations. Since the paper won't take much layering at this point, I had assumed that I wouldn't be able to get the pinks of some of the peonies and their buds, to cover the less desirable areas of green. But I remembered that sometimes in similar situations, I've been able to pick up a color that is actually darker in value and much more intense than the desired final color, and apply it with a very light touch, to achieve the value and intensity I'm actually aiming for. It appears to be working, and now -- though I don't think the pink peony in the upper right corner will end up looking exactly like I had originally envisioned -- I think I can proceed with my original intention of using only colored pencil on this piece, rather than having to add another, more opaque medium.

One of the things I'm enjoying about this piece is that it is forcing me to adapt to what's already there, accepting and even embracing changes to my original idea as they become necessary. Since it's always tempting to go with ideas and applications that feel "safer", I think it's a good thing to sometimes put ourselves into situations where we can't automatically take that route.

Colored Pencil/Watercolor Pencil experimental piece, Step 2, by Amy Lindenberger

The masa paper is very delicate, and since it has already taken a fair amount of "abuse" by being soaked, crinkled and unfolded, it's not inclined to take much pressure from the colored pencils. I already knew this about masa paper, but due to the unplanned nature of this experimental piece, this quality is turning out to be a bit of an obstacle in some places where I'd really like to further subdue the unwanted areas of green by applying more pencil layers. So, in my focal point area (undeveloped flower in the upper right), I suspect I'm going to have to go to something more opaque than pencil, to tone down the green enough to allow the building of the flower colors over top. However, in areas that I want to stay more low-key -- like the flower and leaves in the lower right -- the haphazard nature of the green and blue watercolor pencils on masa paper serving as a background are giving it a sort of antique, even mysterious, look, which I find interesting. On to step 3!

"Mute Swan" 11"x15" Watercolor on 140lb paper

Just finished this painting. I was remembering the smell of the spring gardens that surrounded the pond of swans as they zipped around happily in their South Carolina home. Totally experimental colored pencil/watercolor pencil piece by Amy Lindenberger, Step 1

I taught a workshop this past weekend which I had entitled "And You Thought You Knew Colored Pencil!" (For information about my workshops, please visit http://www.amylindenberger.com/.) The premise of the workshop was that the very things which attract artists to colored pencil -- the ability to render precise details and have ultimate control -- can carry the disadvantage of a loss of spontaneity. So I demonstrated a variety of techniques for advanced students, most using watercolor pencils, which help to bring some of that spontaneity back, but still meet the Colored Pencil Society of America's guidelines of "100% colored pencil" for their annual international exhibitions. This piece started out purely as a demo of a technique for using Masa paper, wetting and "crinkling" the paper to produce an intricate pattern of lines. Then while the paper is still damp-to-wet, a deep blue watercolor pencil was brushed over the "hills", and the color seeps through to the other side of the paper, reminiscent of the lines of a batik. After the paper was thoroughly dry I brushed an olive green watercolor pencil onto the surface in certain areas -- we were discussing the use of this technique for foliage in landscapes. (This is really a watercolor technique, and I'm still new at it, so if any of you watercolorists have done this and have any tips to share I'd be ever so grateful!)

At the conclusion of the workshop I wondered what to do with this demo piece. A few days later I found a photo I had taken last Spring of the peonies that were blooming outside my studio (which I dearly love), and noticed that -- while the greens are too strong for my peony image -- the shape placement was very similar to the flower placement in my photo, and there were elements of blue and green present in the peonies and their foliage. So I began to speculate on what would happen if I drew onto this surface, and used my dry colored pencils to subdue some the areas of color. I can't honestly say I know for certain this will be successful -- I'll see what happens and share my results with you as I go!

John C. Rudy County Park, oil, 8 x 10, Lyn O'Neal

This plein air study was painted at John C. Rudy County Park in York, PA on a hot summer morning. A haze in the distance and a smorgasborg of greens both warm and cool was the interest for me in this piece. I'll never forget the extreme heat that day and I finished quickly to find a place to cool off.

Arrangement of Light, study, 12 x 16, oil on panel, by Ron Donoughe

These houses, which are only a few blocks from my studio, were painted last week. I painted them about two years ago for my daughter. That version was larger, 30 x 40 inches. I find it useful to revisit my favorite places. First of all I know where to park. That may sound stupid but when all these skinny streets are packed with snow, the last thing you want to do is move someone's "Pittsburgh chair". So yes parking is an issue, but so is knowing which direction the sun is moving. You only have so much time before the entire light and shadow distribution changes. It is a race against time. There is also comfort painting the same scene because you learned something that can be applied again, hopefully to your advantage. The paintings never look alike. I think of them as journal entries. They record that particular day. One painter friend refers to his daily paintings as tracks in the snow. That makes sense. We learn from our own work – one painting at a time.

Eve ~ Debi Watson,watercolor portrait

My newest original watercolor painting, image size 14" x 11"
I had this in my studio, unfinished, for a long time. There were a lot of things I wasn't happy with, but with a show deadline Monday, I attacked it with new vigor and Eve is finished. My family voted thumbs down. (My husband says Eve is ugly.) I liked the three dimensional feel, even if it isn't handled like a traditional watercolor. Que sera. List price will be $450, framed, with the caution that this must be shown at the juried exhibit, if accepted.

This proud cat was watching a sunny summer morning go by in Annapolis, MD last summer. He is part of my Fast and Furious series of watercolor demonstrations. This showed how to make white objects look three dimensional and how to create loose flowers, like on the left, versus hard edged flowers, on the right. Add a touch of yellow, and you can feel the sunshine!
