"By the Sea" by Debra Tritt Kreiger

"By the Sea" 10"x15" watercolor on 140lb Arches paper
By the sea was inspired by a place in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina called Shem's Creek. Wonderful small inlet where fishing boats go in and out and the birds and dolphins as well as people just love it. What caught my eye was the bright building and the unusual blue sailboat and of coarse the pelican and seagulls!

I drove the Adirondack Mountains region of New York to drop off my son at camp this past weekend.  Rather than just turning around and driving straight back, I thought I would tour around the lake region a bit and came across this wonderful marina at Schroon Lake where I spotted this sailboat that was begging to be painted!  This piece is painted completely with a palette knife.  I wanted to achieve a sense of atmosphere that was present when I was painting it… a misty, overcast kind of day.  I was close enough to hear the water lapping against the rocks.  It was a blissful moment.  I am happy with the results.

Work in Progress, Rock Point State Park, Linda Young Watercolors

by  Linda Young Artist
Work in Progress:  Rock Point State Park in Maryland
Watercolor 9 x 12
While my husband raced his Formula Volkwagon up the hillclimb at Polish Mountain in Flintstone, Pa.;  I drove to Rock Point State Park and painted for awhile. Wow! The temperature just got too hot for me to finish this one today. The morning was breezy and hot; but the humidity and heat got turned on too intensely and after two hours, I had to quit. This needs a few tweaks here and there to put more color to the mountains and trees, add ripples on the water and deepen the sky. I repositioned the distant dock and took out the hotel.

I don't want to wish away the summer; but less humidity would be a welcome respite for the plein air painter.

Repairing Sails in the Harbor, watercolor by Linda Young

Arrghh, Matey~ me fergot da masts! (Photo taken in daylight)

Repairing Sails in the Harbor
10" x 15"
Watercolor on arches 140 lb cold-pressed paper
(Photo retaken at night after masts added)

This painting was created using my own photo references for the boats and another photo reference from a book I've had for over five years for the harbor.  The man doing the repairs in the forward mast was from a trip to Key West in February 2010.  I knew when I took his picture way up high where the seagulls perch,  I would be using it in a future painting. Sketched and drawn this summer, I didn't get to work on it until yesterday.  See my blog posting for the process from start to finish of this painting.  Another one painted into midnight.

Sailboats Ready to Go by artist Linda Young

9-1/2 x 13-1/2"
Watercolor Titled: Sailboats Ready to go.

On a vacation trip to Key West last February, I watched the flickering, sparkling sunlight play on the water and how it illuminated and danced on the sides of the sailboats. There wasn't anyone around them that morning except for the lone gull that was sitting on the post cooling its body in the breeze. Everything, including the kayaks, sat waiting for the people to arrive for the day to take them out into the water; out to their next adventure. Where would they go I wondered? Who would be coming that day? By nighttime, when I got back to my hotel room, not a boat was moved and the kayaks were still untouched. Another beautiful day in paradise was spent for them lazily bobbing in the rising and falling tide of the Gulf of Mexico.
