BEST FRIENDS By Cecelia Lyden

acrylic/board
8x10
www.cecelilyden.com
My grandaughter, Caroline [blonde], asked me to paint her and her friend, Jen from a photograph. We had two overcast, rainy days last week in FLA and I took that opportunity to comply. This is the tenth painting I have completed during our 3 month stay in Fort Pierce. Tomorrow I will paint at a lovely preserve. It will be my last FLA on-site painting this winter. We will be returning to PA in a week. Is it Spring yet?

Another scene from the train, this formerly quiet little square that I painted a few days ago (CLOSED )is gradually giving way to nature.  We fight it back every chance we get and carve it into symetries we can grasp in our gardens, but it is relentless.  When humans are forgotten it will rage on.  We forget, to our peril, that we are only a very small part of the miracle of life on this planet.

EDGE OF SPRING, 12x9 oil by Sharon Benner

I cleaned out my studio closet and found this plein air painting under a stack of color studies.  I stuck it in a black frame (everything looks good in black) and thought "not too shabby"  I titled it Edge of Spring and I'm hoping we are on the edge of Spring even though it has rained and snowed all day here in Hanover, Pa.

Recipe For Two. ATC. Shelby Pizzarro

The weather we are having today makes me want to cook some real "stick to your ribs" food. The rain is constant and streams down the gutters. The temperatures are relatively mild compared to what we have been experiencing. But still, there is a distinct chill to the air that makes you want something warm and comforting for dinner.

Looking through a cook book, I found inspiration not only for a meal, but for an Artist Trading Card as well.  Attached to a fragment of a recipe was a photo of two women. Irony, Synchronicity, or Muse...the recipe was "for two"...and begs the question: "What Is Guacamole?"

I couldn't help but think...isn't everything more intense, more joyful when shared? Problems don't seem quite as unconquerable. Our happiness blossoms. Creativity soars by exchanging new ideas.

The substrate for the ATC is illustration board. I copied the photo of the two women on to newsprint paper. I stained craft paper with tea. The recipe is from a newspaper printed in 1970. Washi tape, sewing pattern paper, and metallic gold acrylic paint complete the card.

Isn't the recipe for a happy life one that includes a mixture of generosity, compassion, and creativity?  We all have the basic ingredients within us. May you find that person who encourages you to explore a delicious life.

Oh, and in the end I decided on slow cooker lasagna.

Sue Marrazzo Teaches A Youth Teen Collage Art Class

This past Wednesday morning, I had the opportunity to teach a group of teen students who came to the Art Center School and Galleries for a field trip. They created a collage work of art using all kinds of collage materials. They created their works with: found papers, tissue papers, art papers, asian handmade papers, wallpaper, newspaper, and found items. All in all it was all done in 2 hours. The teachers even jumped right in, and created their own works of art!

EMPTY PLATFORM by Nancy Herman

EMPTY  PLATFORM
6" x 8"
oil on canvas board

Lately I have not been drawing in the images before I paint.  This leads to wavey lines that used to be straight and proportions that are less than perfection.  As a result of not following the lines I can use more paint and get into the feeling of the brush rolling along the canvas.  In this painting of the empty train platform I especially enjoyed painting the funky pink pipe.

"Beloved" by Deborah Nell

"Beloved"12" x 9"  Mixed Media on Newsprint
So there is a story to this painting... I went into my studio the other day to get something and happened to glance at the newsprint covering my art table. I haven't changed it for quite some time. The second image is what the newsprint looked like. I couldn't help but see an image of two faces... a woman and a man. So I got out some water soluble crayons and started further defining the faces. The first image is the final painting. I love this painting because of the way it came to be. I've decided I'm going to keep the original painting and have prints for sale.  I guess beauty is in the eyes of the beholder..

Rural Route 6 x 8" oil on paper, plein air Jill Peckelun

It's Spring!  It's March!  And I am outside painting, even though I was really pushing the color on what would have otherwise been a tonalist painting.  But I am in the mood for cheery colors in the sunshine and a happy little piece.  :)

Bumblebee by Debra Tritt Kreiger

Sold!

This Bumblebee watercolor painting was auctioned off at the YWCA's  kickoff reception at the City House Bed & Breakfast in Harrisburg last Friday night.  The painting has a wonderful new home and all the proceeds will benefit the YWCA's emergency shelter & housing programs. A huge thank you to the YWCA's committee members and the owner and staff at City House Bed & Breakfast and all the sponsors for a wonderful reception. The image of the painting is being used on the Cards with Heart fundraiser program. Look for these cards to be sold in various areas. Brath & Hughes Gallery in Mechanicsburg will be carrying them. THE MOTH ORCHID, 14x11 oil by Sharon Benner

The phalaenopsis orchid is referred to as the moth orchid and this yellow green beauty was given to me last Easter by my Granddaughter Holly.  I'm glad it will be in bloom for this Easter.  I deliberately painted the background dark to play up the moth reference and to make a dramatic statement.

BROOKLYN ROOF TOP

My destination when I go to New York is always Brooklyn, to visit my children and grandchildren.  I love the old Victorian houses in Ditmus Park.  This one is a symphony in shades of grey.  I wonder who lives in this room near the top.

Experimental Mixed Media Painting By Artist Sue Marrazzo

Last week, I started experimenting with some new art supplies. It was
30 degrees outside...and there I was painting OUTSIDE! It was invigorating, inspiring and a little InSaNE! I started creating my art piece in layers with a new approach. I used the techniques that are tried and true, but experimented in the creative process. Here are some photos of the beginning layers of this Mixed Media Painting. Notice the paint is still wet, but I LOVED what was starting to happen. I just had to share the start of a NEW WORK with the DPP Community. I will post the finished painting in the near future. Please take a look...

Still on the train, we stopped next to this square that could have been from a French town.

CAROLYN'S FRONT YARD By Cecelia Lyden

acrylic/canvas
11x14
www.cecelialyden.com

Carolyn is in our Florida plein air group. She invited us to paint the blooming azaleas in her front and back yard . Ten of us showed up. I chose the white azalea in the front yard, because of the strong morning sunlight and deep shadows, but also because of the sun hitting the long row of tall pines in the background and the large twisting tree in the foreground.

Journey Within. Collage. Shelby Pizzarro

Journey Within & Forever - Collage
I noticed for the first time today how much longer the days are becoming. The icy grip of Winter is moving behind us. Spring is teasing us...a little sunshine here, a little hint of a warm breeze there.  And I am grabbing all of it with both hands delighted with the change.

And change and the Seasons shape who we are and the life we live. A quote I often reflect upon is from Henry David Thoreau's Walden. It reads in part: "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation." I firmly believe it is true. Being a "grown-up", accepting responsibilities and the life it brings has a seductive way of siphoning any spontaneity and creativity we may have dragged kicking and screaming into our present.

But there is an escape. Every time we remind ourselves to constantly look at things differently we rekindle the flame of creativity that dwells within us all. As Artists, it is our stock in trade.

Travel is the genesis of my creativity. It allows me to break free and fulfill the dreams I dream. It is physical travel, or seeing another point of view through a film, or reading about an adventure. Travel opens the door to my bliss. It has, and will continue, to make me who I am. It is the nourishment my Art craves.

The substrate for the collage is a canvas panel. Art paper, magazine paper, handmade paper are woven together and finished with a French stamp.

Are you resigned to a life of quiet desperation? Are you willing to challenge your conventional way of thinking to live a life of great success and great failure? Are you willing to follow your soul to the place that reaffirms your unique and flawless self? I wish you a life fully lived.

Pathways, 12 x 12" oil en plein air painting Jill Peckelun

Mid 50's, they said. Warm sunshine, they said. I neglected to hear the part about 30 mile an hour gusts of cold cold air blasting my way, whipping my paint rag against my frail chilled bones. Sigh. I had fun anyway. It was that good to be outside again.

Salad fixings, Linda Young Watercolors

"Salad fixings", 8 x 16" watercolor by Linda Young

Here's another painting with the cabbage as one of the main characters in the still life. This one was more leafy and green and not as tightly packed as "Veggies Anyone?" was last week.  While I was painting this, the aroma of the cut red onion drifted around the room and I kept thinking I needed to go home to make a salad for dinner that evening!

Pompeian Virgin Olive Oil, garlic, onion and Cabbage...what would you make with these ingredients?  This would make a nice painting for someone's kitchen even if you're not a gourmet chef.
