"At the Hearst #4"
5"x5" watercolor ~ A Painting A Day
This is my study for a larger painting.
I just liked the unusual angle and all that
warm sun shining!

I spent the weekend at Gettysburg so I
am putting California on the back burner and
starting tomorrow playing with snow on the
battlefield. New inspiration.

"Morning Glow" Pastel WIP by Tatiana Myers.

"Morning Glow"
12 x 12"  Pastel on Pastelbord

My new project is another 12x12" Pastel painting of Wildwood Lake wet land sanctuary I turned my first layer of pastels into watercolor wash and now going to proceed with traditional "dry" application. I like it so far. Perhaps simple fact that I love Wildwood is very helpful too!

This is one of my paintings on display at the Hanover Area Art Guild where I am Artist of the Month for February. The theme for my display in the "Artist of the Month" window is about
the love and affection we have for our pets. I really love showing that connection people and their pets share in my paintings. Check out the guild's web page at

Drawing in Progress for my next watercolor

I am excited to start on a new series of paintings here. I had a photo session recently with two mommies to be and a beautiful little boy from Haiti and two darling little girls (the little one here and the other is three and definitely loved the camera as much as it loved her). This little one had no hesitation when asked to give the new baby a hug. I still have a ways to go on the drawing but hope to start the painting on Wed. I did a closeup on my drawing here but the painting will show the entire mommy as well as full view of the rocking chair. I love doing the pregnant mommies as it is just such a peaceful and precious time. This one is done on a full sheet - 22" x 30".

Melwood Street, 16 x 20, by Ron Donoughe

This is the latest in my vintage painting series. I loved the austere feeling of this house on an unpaved road. The source photo that I used was taken on April 12, 1920. The street runs under what is now the Bloomfield Bridge.

Catitude ~ Debi Watson ~ Watercolor

This is a fun watercolor I did as a demonstration for my class a while back. It's my cat, Bitsy, who thinks she's the queen. (Right now her majesty is enjoying watching the birds at the feeder.) I have two bigger, more serious landscapes almost finished and will post them soon. See one in progess on my website at www.debiwatson.com

KEEPING UP APPEARANCES By Cecelia Lyden

SOLD
acrylic

The first time I saw Fort Pierce, I was struck with how beautiful its palm trees were and how clean the streets looked. My immediate second impression was how empty those streets were. As we drove towards our vacation destination on North Hutchinsin Island, I could see blocks with empty storefronts and I realized that we were in yet, another forlorned town with lost businesses and empty streets. This beautiful young palm tree, planted after a hurricane had destroyed many of them, caught my eye one morning. It is in front of one of those empty, "signless", storerfronts and reflected in its window is another closed business across the street. I loved the color of the tree against the pale blue green of the building.
It is a bit depressing looking down clean streets, many with beautiful recently renovated buildings, with few or no people in them. This street was no exception and the liveliness of the tree seemed, to me, a stark contrast with the deadness of the empty window.

The town officials are working to come up with ways to attract tourists and businesses. In the meantime, keeping up appearances, by replanting those lost palm trees, refurbishing buildings and maintaining clean streets may eventually help to revive Fort Pierce.

"Sing Along" Oil Painting by Charlotte Yealey

11x14
oil painting
This oil painting is one I started a while back but was put aside during the holidays to work on commissions. The guitar player is from a member on the Red Bubble site who belongs to a group called Bubbler Portraits. Members of this group post photos of themselves for other members to paint and then post challenges. I added the labrador retriever because I am a dog person. This is actually a cropped scan of the painting-the actual painting shows more background which is deep dark woods. The photo was probably taken with late day light which made the woods in very dark. I am not happy with this scan or the photo I took of it so I will have to photograph it again. I will post this on Red Bubble when the challenge comes up.

The first day in A Painting Journal by Linda Young

The first page

This is a real first for me; to make a painting journal.  I got the idea from Joe Miller's "Joe's journals, The Art & Tales of a Sojourner".  He explains "journaling can take many forms, from simply keeping a diary of today's weather to a more elaborate journal of painting, photos, clippings, etc. and recording whatever one wishes" .  Joe did his journals in watercolor and writing.  If you're interested, go to this link at Cheap Joe's to purchase it or see more.  It's interesting to read and to see what he experienced in his travels.

My first page was started this morning in a prior post on my own blogspot; I sat down tonight to kick up the values a notch, to add notes for color suggestions for the subjects and to write about my dog kicking me as I painted. She finally succeeded and got total possession of the couch and my undivided attention.

I'm glad I got started on this journal before the month of January ended.  At least I can say I tried to start the year out right with good intentions of making this an ongoing  project.

The making of 'Watercolor Study of Variegate Darter (Etheostma variatum)'

Final Version of 'Watercolor Study of a Variegate Darter (Etheostoma variatum)'
Transparent Watercolor on Crescent Mat Board.
Double matted on Identical Mat Board (Museum Quality)
Image Size: 9" x 4.5". Matted Size: 14" x 11".

A continuation of a series of darters found on the East Coast. This is the fourth
darter of the series. It is another colorful one- similar to the Rainbow Darter
but found a little farther west- in the Ohio River Drainage Waterways.

These small bottom huggers (Around 2 inches long) are one of my
favorite subjects. I love the various markings and especially
the bulldog faces with bugged out eyes.

I wanted to show another version of how a fish appears- like magic
on my paper.

New project, Dianne Lorden

This commissioned piece will keep me busy for the next few weeks; Christ Lutheran Church, Gettysburg. I've spent a few days - on and off - on the technical drawing (for later transfer to board). Part of the reason it's tricky is that it's not a current-day rendition, but a period illustration. Yet, there are not many pictures of this building that suit my project. So, I'm knitting several together as best I can. This sort of work brings up the oddest, trivial question about changes to a building over time ... but it's not boring!

One of my blog followers Irina Sztukowski, is an excellent artist and recently did a wonderful Sketchbook project called "Down my Street".  It jogged my memory having done a drawing of one of our local barbershops here in my hometown.  I finished the little painting this evening and I think I'll work on a similar project for my home town.  Thanks for the idea Irina.

self portrait, Maria Kovalenko Leysens

I found another blogger who had been doing self portraits for a year. She explored and posted so many ideas. I shared a few of them with my adult watercolor class as an example on how to expand the use of materials, just have fun and play. My demonstration stayed pretty close to the example, but my students went over the top with the process. All of them made the project their own and I have to say, I am so proud and just a little jealous of what they did.

Very quick, maybe half an hour, charcoal study from the portrait session today. I spent too much time visiting and chatting. I did get the gist of the model but missed a lot of the subtle lights and darks.

CHANGING WEATHER By Cecelia Lyden

acrylic
8x10
What started out as a warm, sunny morning with a few puffy clouds at the Fort Pierce Marina, rapidly changed into a cool overcast morning as storm clouds began to form. Two weeks ago, I painted alone in the drizzle. Last week the fog was so thick, I could not see the ocean, the horizon-nothing. This week, Tuesday morning looked promising. Several of us showed up to paint. Most of us finished our painting before the threat of rain sent us packing.

Bal Masque, Maria Kovalenko Leysens

This is a quick watercolor painting (12x20 inches) that I did last year for a local show. I did not enter it because it is not my usual style. I took another look at it this year and I guess it grew on me. Kind of fun, so I entered it.
The inspiration is from a photo that was taken from the annual Kokoon club, Bal Masque which was the ticket to get if you were in Cleveland about 80 years ago.

Annual Members Exhibit called The Emerald Show at C.A.L.C.

The Carlisle Arts Learning Center 19 N Hanover Street, Carlisle, will be having an intake for their annual members exhibit on February 10, 11, 12th.  Contact the art center at 243-6973 for more information about number of entries, cost, etc.  I do not have this information at this time to put into the post; but as soon as I get it, I will let you know.  I think the maximum number of entries is limited to two.

The annual exhibit is based on a "color" and this year's theme color is "Emerald".

Small mixed media, Dianne Lorden

A little foray into mixed media: this 5-1/2 x 5-1/2 is pastel over watercolor. Believe it or not, I had never done this before and did find it offered an interesting exercise in planning ahead (not my strong suite). I certainly will experiment with it more.

Horses in The Snow by Michelle Montes

This is on my drafting table now - a little 10 minute sketch on LaCarte paper with a red Pastel Carre'. When my husband and I went up to the family farm, we drove around while it was snowing and caught this. I grew up on a farm where we raised and trained Quarter Horses, had beef cattle, and Australian Cattle dogs. This really made me miss my horses. While I was growing up, horses were the only thing I would draw. When I showed my drawings to my mother, if they weren't right she would say "Go look at your horse." Some people would say "Oh how mean, didn't you get upset when she said that to you?" Funny thing, it never occurred to me to be upset, I just did what she said, because I knew I wasn't getting everything quite right, and I wanted to draw them well.

"Winter Dance" by Dianne Lorden

This is the view outside my sun room window; I'm afraid it's as close as I'll come to plein air in these temperatures!! I used to take that wind sock in for the winter, but one year it snowed early and I saw how festive it looks with snow as a backdrop. I've left it out ever since. No doubt it won't last as long, but what a pleasant site in the depths of January. This pastel is done on Fabriano Tizano "flecked color: pastel paper with a variety of pastels.

The O'Brian Place, Irish Hill PA by Michelle Montes

I sent off the 8x10 painting that I did on the prototype substrate to California, but I really loved working with the image, so I did it on a full sheet of LaCarte paper with Sennelier and Pastel Carre". I stayed up till 4:00am working on this because I was so moved with the subject matter. I haven't done that since Graduate school! I have already taken slides and framed it. Now, I have two more pieces of LaCarte paper left, so I think I am going to get myself busy tonight and do a few more paintings.
