My sister sent us two Harry & David boxes of beautiful pears for a Christmas gift.  After painting these, they are now in the refrigerator sliced and ready to be eaten.

Trying to get back to a more normal life. Linda Young, watercolor artist

The summer months flew by with several workshops, a vacation with my husband and two dogs plus the weeks I spent plein air painting.  I'm not complaining, but I'm glad it's all behind me now so I can work on completing the paintings begun in that time period. I just seemed to be spinning my paint brush and not getting much accomplished. Lord knows, the housework ceased during that time and the dust bunnies just kept growing around my house!

These are some paintings I had done and the time frame for them.

Early September in Cape Cod:  Eight paintings started, six will be framed.
On a day when the rains threatened and high winds prevailed, Claire B Carnell, Bill Andrews and I could find no shadows anywhere and found ourselves on a shoreline by a windmill.  Climbing the stairs down to the shore to get out of the wind and get a better view, we didn't seem to find anything to paint except a dead blue crab!  So,  the three of us gathered around the deceased blue crab and decided to paint it because it's colors had not diminished from it's shell. I'm not going to say which one of us arranged it's claws as if it were alive!

Mid September at Harvest of the Arts:  Carlisle
Having had to work in the morning this day, I arrived at the event at 3:00 pm.  I only had two hours to paint before the festivity was over so I set up next to the former home of the "Farmer's Trust Bank" in the alley across from the old courthouse.  As I painted, I enjoyed listening to the US Army Rock Band play great licks of old hits and new.

First week in October:  Three days at Longwood Gardens
In a plein air workshop with new plein air artists as well as seasoned ones, I didn't get much accomplished the first day.  The stink bugs were crawling all over everyone and everything.
Here's what I did before the bugs got the best of me and I quit:

Here's a view of what I think is "the pump house" for the swimming pool behind the gallery in the courtyard.

October 15  And finally, a painting that is comprised from a photo of a barn from the paint out at the town of Lisburn,   I've added a farm scene with rolling hills and even a dog in it's house.  This is one painting that to me was like a collage of "things" you'd see on a farm; my brush kept inventing each time I dipped into the paint!

Some of you painters who were at Art on the Farm will remember these lambs.  These lambs were at the Dickinson College Farm just outside of Boiling Springs.  It's been two years since I've started to paint them.  Using four different colors for the underpainting in four different sized rectangles, the lambs were painted with complimentary colors throughout this piece.  The original inspiration to paint in this style was from a workshop I took with professional artist Judi Betts.  The painting technique was difficult because I had to continually remind myself what colors to paint without creating mud.  This painting was similar in style as were the Boer Goats from two years ago.

Plein air at Devil's Den by Linda Young Watercolors

Work in Progress at The Devil's Den

The labryrinth of boulders and crevices in front  of me was known to the local residents as "Devil's Den", a name that would become famous in the history of the Civil War.  The rocky gorge to the left of me and behind earned the name "slaughter pen" for the great number of Confederates killed there.
The battlefield was littered with bodies, blood ran down the rocks as soldiers breathed their last breath. Fathers and sons cried out for help but none was to come. Their place in history and life as they knew it stopped with the bayonnet or bullet from the opponent's rifle.  Before I began to paint, I thought about those things and I visualized just what these rocks must have looked like with man's blood covering them on that fateful day!

Within the underpainting of this work, I used a light wash of quinacridone red as a reminder of the blood shed there. The edges of the rocks were outlined with permanent ink for the harshness and brutality of lives lost in war.  I wanted the edges to appear exact and immovable as those huge bolders are.  Gouache was used sporatically on the tops and crevaces.  For me, it represents the softness of the men who were able to rise up from this place and return to go home to their loved ones.
This painting was completed underneath the awning of our motorhome where we are camping for the week.  I'll be going back home to mat and frame the completed paintings for exhibit at the reception on Sunday.

On June 5, 2011, there was a Bluegrass concert on the Mountain at the Mansion at King's Gap.  John took his camera and I my paints, etc.  The day was warm, people and children milled around everywhere; but mostly, the garden was unattended except for the few ladies who were tending, pruning and cleaning up the individual gardens. 

I painted this while sitting next to the shade garden looking outward to the pink roses, peony bushes and ornamental grasses.  The sunlight poked through the spaces in the branches and leaves of the trees and cast their shadows upon the grass in front of me.  In the distance, the green leaved trees were dappled with sunlight and shadows as children played a small game of kickball with their grandmother.

It was a beautiful day.

This painting was born from a small work I had completed last May (see 2010 blog spot) when the hail storm hit our area of town.  My intentions were always to create a larger painting from it and after many hours struggling to fill in the spaces below the poppies and throughout the painting; I've gone as far as I want to go.  I wrestled with cropping it but removing the weight at the bottom made it feel too much like it was floating and not "grounded".   

Mother's poppies were growing until someone got the weed trimmer too close to the plant and the poppies met their demise.  They never returned but I was fortunate to take a picture of them before the "deed" was done.  Painted here in watercolor is the celebration of my mother's poppies for flower lovers everywhere.

I usually paint from photographs; but today was so beautiful, sunny and nice I thought I'd try to paint my azalea bush that is just now blooming.  I've photographed it for several years now planning always with the intention to paint it; but it just didn't happen.  Until today.  

Today was a perfect day and the azaleas invited me to sit awhile as they posed for me.

The idea came from a digital photograph of my tarnished silver bowl in a still life display I had set up to paint.   I discovered by zooming in on a particular part of the bowl it had wonderful abstract qualities within it.  To my surprise, I saw many colors (including emerald) which were not really visible until I did that.  Here is my tarnished silver bowl, enlarged, reorganized and painted with watercolor just for you to see what I saw.

Emerald Lagasse green with envy, watercolor by Linda Young

The idea to make Chef Lagasse green came from our most recent members art exhibit at the Carlisle Arts Learning Center named "the Emerald Show".  Guidelines for the show were to be creative in the use of emerald.  Well, Emeril Lagasse was my choice to paint a portrait of and to paint him with green skin, naming him Emerald Lagasse.  Exaggerating this in my mind was for "Emerald Lagasse" to be the jealous brother of Emeril.  Thus the title of this piece is "Emerald Lagasse, green with envy".

Actual painting is 15 x 20 and will be shown in full on the blog after the last day of intake.  Gotta keep it a secret because it's so different for me...  I'll have two entries; but am only showing you one little section of this.

Race cars on the starting line

This is a painting I did for my husband who is an avid hill climb racer.  He's the guy in the front car Number 95 waiting in line to do his time trial at Summit Point, West Virginia. The drivers line up and wait their turn to go around this flat track as fast as they can.  The remainder of the year, they race up a curvy, winding hill against the clock and others in their "class".  The class winner gets to take home a trophy; no money is won in this sport!  The red car here is a Formula Vee, which is a volkswagon engine and frame with a race car body.  Oh, these boys (and some girls too) and their toys!

This is a mini. I love to do these little paintings in between the larger ones. Gives me a little practice in painting a little quicker. I also wanted to try the 300lb paper which I like very much. I used the layers of lettuce to give a different texture into the mix and to incorporate the complimentary color scheme, and to make it pop!
