Because of erosion that has been occurring along the shoreline
of Cape Cod, some of the light houses have been moved
further inland so that they are protected. The sea was
to the right of this view of Nauset Light, but not
close enough to include in the painting.
I took a walk down to the beaches after finishing this painting
and saw a group of seals playing in the sparkling water!

Shown: Anna, Juliana, Evy, Sophie, and Ada |
On Saturday I instructed an ART PARTY at The Art Center School and Galleries in Mechanicsburg, PA. There were 5 GIRLS: Evy, Ada, Juliana, Sophie, and Anna. We Had FUN making a MIXED MEDIA PAINTING. We collaged and then painted with acrylic paints...They ALL had a finished MIXED MEDIA MASTERPIECE at the END of the ART PARTY! Here are some photos of the Art Party...I did get permission to share these photos on the DPP Blog!
Take a LOOK at the FUN!

Harvest of the Arts by Julie Riker
Saturday was spent painting at the Harvest of the Arts Festival in
Carlisle, PA along with some fellow painters from Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters
Larry Lerew, Vivian Brandler, and I set up at the intersection of High Street and
Hanover Street, the beginning of the event where they closed off 4
blocks to traffic. How often can you set up right in the middle of the
street to paint? We had a great time painting along to the music!
Below is the painting I did. I wasn't 100% focused on this one...never
can be at these events with people stopping to talk and watching over
your shoulder...but it's fun. I especially love the children with their
painted faces who are so interested in watching me paint.
Thanks to Vivi's friend Jeb for modelling!

Hershey Park by Jill Peckelun
Hershey Park painted from the Hershey Gardens viewpoint. There are a LOT of Hershey Park rides. I tried to simplify and just suggest the architecture that moved throughout the painting. It ends up looking like something that should be entitled: The Dark Side of Hershey Park. That wasn't my intention really, but mood- you gotta love it.

As much as I loved the sea and beach areas, I was
most compelled by the marshes. This view provided
a combination of both - with the marshes in the mid-ground,
and a glimpse of the sea in the background.
Looking at these paintings this morning
filled me with such a longing to go back
to this wonderful place!

menage a trois
if the trombone’s in charge
the trumpet won’t play
the horn won’t say
if he’ll go or stay
such is the way
our world behaves today
compromise is out
dissonance has clout
there could be peace and harmony

Very unique way to show, thank You to Internet!

Beach Life by Julie Riker
6x12 oil
There are few things I like better than a day at the beach...painting is
one of them. So set me up with my paint supplies under a beach umbrella
and I am as happy as a clam.
This is one of the paintings I did while I was in Chincoteague a few
weeks ago for their plein air festival. I was noticing all the colorful
beach umbrellas and how quickly the color faded out of them as they
receded into the hazy distance where sky, sand, and sea almost became
white.
This piece did not sell at the sale on Chincoteague, so I brought it
home with me where I was pleased when it sold very quickly to a local
buyer.

I'LL HAVE A SIDE ORDER OF FUNGUS, PLEASE
An Original Oil Painting by
Claire Beadon Carnell
Thanks so much to Pat Koscienski for hosting this month's DPP Challenge.
You still have three days to submit any entry!
'I'll Have a Side Order of Fungus, Please''
Oil on Canvas
8 x 6
You never know where your inspiration will come from...
I was in the very long, and very slow line of cars at
the Wendy's Drive-In window in Carlisle waiting to
get some of their GF chili for lunch. As I was getting closer to
my goal, I saw something in the crotch of the tree that grows
right by the curve that gets you closer to where you
can place your order. I had to do a double-take, were those
some small alien ships hovering in the shelter of that tree? No, it
was three delightful fungi that had attached themselves
to the tree and were flourishing - must be the Wendy's chili!
I painted this for the DPP Challenge Blog, hosted this month by
Daily Painters of Pennsylvania Artist Pat Koscienski.
October's Challenge will be hosted by Sue Marrazzo

Where's the Grapes?, Maria Kovalenko Leysens
I went out a few weekends ago to photograph some grapes as reference for my adult watercolor class. Drove to many places and found they were harvested or none on the vine. So I went to Costco, bought some grapes, cut some vines and took them home. I used twist ties and the backs of chairs to set up the grapes and vines against a strong evening sun and photographed.
This is the demonstration painting that I did for the class. We focused on the warm light coming from behind and the cool light reflected from the sky above. Using my artistic license I took out the twist ties and darkened the background to keep the focus on the warm glow.

Ashcombe Sunflowers, by Linda Young
Ashcomb Sunflowers, watercolor by Linda Young 9 x 12" |
This painting of sunflowers was done mostly on location at the Ashcomb Farm; the darkest detailing was completed in the studio.
The underpainting was from a something I started this summer at the Camp Hill Plein Air Festival; it began as a landscape with a bridge, stream and trees running through it. I know where it was; but it is now invisible.

DAILY PAINTERS OF PA COMING TO BROOKLYN 2012

I felt a need to share it with ALL the Daily Painters and the Followers of the BLOG.

The BWAC Gallery Lounge with the Jazz band |
The Artist's Reception for this Art Show was an experience that many artists long for. We got to share our art with a whole NEW World-NYC, so to say. Mary Beth said it best, "It's good sometimes being the little FISH in the BIG fishbowl." It's so true. Thanks for your leadership Mary Beth, and supporting your peer artists!
Also, not only did we get to meet New York artists, and supporters...It was GREAT meeting the DPP Group members, too! What a fine group of LADIES: Deb Kreiger, Dianne Lorden, Mary Beth Brath, Donna Berk Barlup, Patricia A. Griffin, Brownyn Hughes, Christine Marx and others! There was Jazz Music in the background by The Stefan Bauer Experience...What a unique ART VENUE!

I am taking a little detour from my examination of shadows and looking at tracks in the sand. I believe this one was made by a sea gull. This looks black and white in reproduction but it is actually created with many shades of brown, grey and white. Sand is actually quite colorfull close up.

BLUE AND WHITE II
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell
'Blue and White II'

A break from the Cape Cod Paintings! I finished this painting
up in the studio today. I inherited my love of dishes from
my mother (and her mother), so the desire to collect them
is pretty strong - especially the blue and white ones.
Several years ago I did a large painting of all blue and
white pottery (see below) - this one is smaller and
includes some flowers and grapes.

Busy Bees at Ashcombe Farms by Daily Painter of Pennsylvania Mary Beth Brath
Busy Bees by Mary Beth Brath
8x10" Acrylic on Canvas
The title is so fitting. On Thursday several members of our local plein air group met to paint at a local nursery. The sunflowers were covered with bees working feverishly to complete their purpose. I was having similar feelings with the Daily Painters of Pennsylvania NYC reception just 2 days away.
I was distracted. The painting was not completed on site even though I had plenty of time to finish. I finished the painting today in my home studio.
By the way, the opening reception on Saturday was incredible. All of the work was very well received and several guests were taking pictures of the artwork and the attending members. Many contacts were made and business cards exchanged. New friendships were made. Ideas shared. Posts about the day will appear soon for everyone to see. I hope each attending member will write about their experience.

BOWED HEADS By Cecelia Lyden
oil/stretched canvas
11x14
It was a glorious day for painting sunflowers outdoors at a local farm. I was happy to be outside in the sun and sweet-smelling fresh air but, the sunflowers looked pathetic, with drooping heads and withering petals, as if they knew the end of summer was near. However, there still was enough color to paint and the heart-shaped leaves made a lively design.
