"Shrimp Boat off St. Simon's Island" - pastel, 9"x12"

I finished this yesterday (Wednesday, March 31). It's from a photo I took while staying on the Golden Isles, off the coast of Georgia. There are salt flats there (you can kayak in them), where the baby shrimp are "born." They get swept into the Atlantic by regular flushing tides, and then the shrimp boats haul 'em back in for cocktails.
It seems these boats are always accompanied by sea gulls, swarming the nets.

It amazes me how you can create such fluidity in your work using pastels--beautiful soft atmoshperic setting contrasted with the hard shape and details of the fishing boat. This piece reminds me of one of my favorite artists, Winslow Homer.

Thanks, guys - I use those "color shapers" with the foam tips. They sort of allow me to paint with the pastel pigments. I wear 'em down to nubs! If you try them, tell me what you think.
