Camp Hill 2013 Quick Draw Competition Painting, by Linda Young

14 x 18" Mount Calvary Episcopal Church, watercolor
2 Hour Quick Draw Competition Painting
Official Stamp with "Plein Air Camp Hill May 18 2013 Quick Draw"

This year, as I painted in Camp Hill, I focused on architecture in several of the paintings I did.  I also realized I needed to post this painting and after 45 more minutes of tweeking it, I call this complete.  This is the Mount Calvary Episcopal Church that is located next to Willow Park in Camp Hill.

When the quick draw competition was over at Camp Hill recently and this painting was sitting in a mat under non-glare glass on my easel to be judged, the colors appeared to drab out under the overcast sky .  That's a disadvantage of painting in watercolor en plein air when I don't use enough pigment! All it took in the tweeking of this was more emphasis on the shadow areas.  Everything else was fine but the values were too close when it came time to judging.  Live and learn!

I have only participated in the quick draw two years; but I learn something new each time.  Last year, I didn't have a clue what I was going to paint; this year, I practiced on Friday to visualize and paint just what I wanted to say in this painting.  When Saturday rolled around and it was time to paint, I knew where to start and how to proceed.

Next year's another year to compete and I'll take with me lessons learned in this year's competition.

A familiar setting to me. Such a lovely rendering--I still haven't mustered up the gumption to enter the Quick Draw--maybe next year.
