"Building" Blocks by Julie Riker

As I was painting at the Spangler Farm (see my last post) I kept thinking about how the buildings in sunlight were like blocks - simple shapes - with a clearly defined light and dark sides.  So for my Thursday evening oil painting class I set up an arrangement of wooden blocks and challenged the students to see how the colors and values changed in shadow.  It is a great exercise and good practice for painting any structures in the landscape.
