Grandmothers All
My vibrant sunflowers, once so spry
Have bent down just a bit
Heaving a sigh
Arms now rest at their hip
Heads no longer held high
As they gather their skirts
With a knowing shrug
And tighten their bonnets
With a sly little tug
Oh, they still love quilting bees
The Butterfly Ballet
And fat goldfinches
Those hungry dine-ees
But grandma sunflowers
Surely you see
You’ve grown old in mere hours
Still you’re beautiful to me

Well, I really appreciate this beautiful pair of paintings. It really is a bummer, what the heat has done to our gardens. I overheard neighbors talking last evening, while I was out watering herbs, and one was saying: "You can water every night, but it's just not like rain." Ain't it the truth.
Such a sad, yet hopeful painting and poem. My hydrangeas, too, are looking limp and tired, feeling the oppressive weather.
