Not much more to report, but I did say in my last post two weeks ago that I'd post the final version of this piece. All I've added is a little more definition to the bud in the lower left quadrant, and tied the colors and values in a bit more in the partial flower below it. (Incidentally, this posted image is looking somewhat darker, on my screen, than the actual drawing.)I've started another one on the same paper, using hydrangeas as my subject matter this time. Amy, I think this turned out to be a very beautiful and dramatic painting. I love how the flowers are not so obvious.
You've got me thinking peonies. What I really like it the bud. Not sure if it was your intent, but there's something vintage about the feel of the muted tones and how they blend. I find it quite appealing!
Thanks to both of you! This painting had lots of surprises, but two of the things you pointed out -- how the flowers became more obscure and how the whole thing developed a sort of vintage appearance -- were things I found I liked as well. What I guess I mostly discovered with this masa paper, is that you have to let it dictate some of the direction. And since I sometimes am a little too control-oriented in my work, for me that was probably a good thing!
