Belsnickle #2 ~ Andy Smith, watercolors
I wanted to try a close up of this pottery
belsnickle. It is a matter of scaling it
up and there is more detail in the closeup
view. I also like the way the folds in the
curtain turned out.
The rule in watercolor is no white paint!
All the white is the paper.
I had a question about my paper...
Each watercolor is painted on Arches
300lb Cold Press paper. It is the only paper
I use. I use transparent watercolors
currently using Davinci. I occasionally
add ink to the wash. I paint in a series of
washes to build color, creating shadows
and a strong use of light.
Feel free to ask me anything! I enjoy questions.

I like the tips, Andy. It seems so often that I miss out on the transparency and it is what keeps drawing me to watercolors. I love the feeling of cold pewter I get from the belsnickel...
I have to say that the blue glazing on the belsnickle is my favorite part of the painting - very well done!
Love the close up of this guy. I imagine it mattted and framed and hanging in my foyer!! What a great welcome this would be for guests at Holiday time.
