I just finished this portrait of a day at the beach.
Looks like fun!

Center Street, Eureka Springs, Ak. by Dianne Lorden

I don't think I ever posted this one.
I've been really involved in crafting gourds for weeks, for a show and also some holiday orders, so have been away from the paintings. But I've always enjoyed busy, colorful street-scapes and thought I'd share this one. It's a couple of years old. There are a lot of nutty irregularities in it, but it did capture the feeling I enjoy.

My artwork can be viewed at South Mountain Sketchbook

Bucks County Winter 6 x 6 oil on canvas by Christine Marx

Well, I cannot believe it but I finished two paintings today. I usually don't do two paintings a month but I am trying to loosen up some of my work and am doing small quick works. I used a picture that I took after last year's epic snowfall and I have to say I am happy with how the painting turned out. Makes me almost look forward to it snowing. LOL

Standard Schnauzer Christmas Card by Charlotte Yealey

This is an acrylic painting for a Christmas card design for my friend who breeds and shows Standard Schnauzers. For the past 13 years, I create a design from Dana's idea and her Christmas cards are printed from it. This year she said create something where Santa is laying down with puppies around him.Click here to see my greeting card store.

Not so boring Boer Goats by Linda Young

"That might be my name; but I am not a boer (bore)" says the goat.
Because of a recent workshop I took with Judi Betts, it inspired me to look through my photo references to locate some goat and other domestic animal photos.  This is a drawing of a doe, or nanny goat and the little kids around her.   This will be an experimental piece in an attempt to practice what I was taught in her workshop.  Here's my goats sketch for today. (The actual painting is posted beneath it)

copyright Linda Young
Title: "Boer Goats" not so boring
Size: 9" x 12"
Watercolor on 140# Arches CP
This is the finished piece; painted with many layers upon layers of color.  Complimentary colors on top of complimentaries in and around each other; every brush stroke an experiment and play in freedom and the will to push a little farther.  I've loved painting this style so much, I'm planning more as time allows.

I want to say thank you to Judi Betts for teaching from your heart, Your new friend, Linda

Yearly Poinsettia, Maria Kovalenko Leysens

We usually paint a poinsettia in December during the adult watercolor class.
This year we are doing two small paintings to cut and glue to see what kind of abstract patterns we come up with.  My students did some wonderful work and I feel a little bad that we will be cutting them up, but I also know that the end result will be full of another kind of discovery.

Wagner's Violin Watercolor Still Life with Violin/Bust by Daily Painter Bertie Brown - Art is Instrumental

Wagner's Violin

original watercolor still life with violin, bust: 22" x 30"

is Wagner’s violin

tuned to play his Lohengrin

could that horn a bit too small

belt out Siegfried’s famous call?

and did Wagner fret or worry

that his music wouldn’t curry

to his benefactors’ whims

casting poverty on him?

heavens no

I don’t think so

as his storied life does show

The weather is dark and stormy, and it was hard to get a photo without glare.  I will retake pictures soon, but this is pretty accurate color-wise.  As for the painting, for some reason I found this devilishly difficult to pull off but now I'm happy with it.  This is my lovely daughter, Julia.

AMAZINGLY ORANGE TREES By Cecelia Lyden

oil/linen

11x14

The fall season has a way of calling attention to trees and shrubs that normally I would pass right by, without even a glance. But these trees, standing tall and straight, in the bright sunlight, under a "powder"blue sky in my credit union's parking lot just screammed at me. "Take my picture!" Luckily, I had my recently-charged camera in the car, and was able to take several colorful photos.

Play Things - Watercolor Still Life by Daily Painter Bertie Brown - Art is Instrumental

Play Things

original watercolor with jacks, marbles, horns: 8" x 10"

back in the day

I remember we played

with marbles and jacks

and baseballs and bats

but sometimes I recall

though I tried hard to stall

I had to apply

my lip

to the tip

of my tarnished old horn

and try not to sound

too bad or forlorn

much later I found

practice, patience plus time

would greatly improve

my horn teacher’s mood!

Windswept, 24 x 48, Ron Donoughe

This painting is from a collaborative effort with my twin brother Don. While here in San Francisco he shared a photo from the coast he took this summer. I liked it so much that this painting was created. During last visit here I did a lot of coastal studies which came in handy for additional reference.

Mark H Brown - A most serene Gulf Coast Sunset

Here is a new painting for my Florida tour this year.  I just finished it today.  The still waters and glowing light captured my emotions and left me so peaceful and rested.  I think it might be my best landscape to date.  Love, love, love it!  I hope to repost some of these when I scan them in with a better image.

REMEMBERING SUMMER
Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Remembering Summer'
Oil
20 x 16

This Summer, we had the pleasure of going to Port Royal, PA
to paint on the farm of Eric and Nancy Olson.   Before leaving,
we were allowed to take some of these gorgeous  sunflowers
home with us.  I took mine up to my studio, plopped them into
this old half-gallon canning jar and took loads of pictures for
when I would have time to paint this remembrance of summer.

"Kiwi Plate" Egg Temepra and Oil WIP by Tatiana Myers. Finished touch!

"Kiwi Plate" Egg Tempera and Oil
11 x 14" Ampersand Claybord.

This night After playing some more with this painting, I had to convince myself that it IS finished. Of course nothing is ever easy... and as soon I talked myself into "I'm done with it" mood, my desk-lamp dropped down from the shelf, turned over all my brushes and open bottle with solvent. Liquid went all over place, it was scary... but as far i could see - no single drop went on freshly finished painting what was sitting in the middle of the same very desk.... I can consider this no less, but a miracle a definite sign that it is a time to live it along. I'm going to let it dry. Then I will have to go with painting medium all over one more time (just a medium, no paint!). this way I'll make sure that all tempera paint is covered with oil medium and when it will be time to varnish it - varnish will go on evenly... Otherwise I'm done and going back to those Gardenias.

While kiwi was drying... "Gardenia Trio" WIP.

This is second long-term painting I'm working on at the same time I'm finishing my "Kiwi". This will be a combination of Tempera/Oil as well, but simplified to value-scale underpainting in tempera over-painted with color in oils. I wanted to do nice painting of white gardenias for some time, but couldn't find one I would want to paint... till the end of this summer, when it happened during one of our visits to Longwood Gardens.
This also would be a first time when I'm working on so called "True Gesso" hand-made panels involving some rabbit glue and marble dust... wonderful panels for tempera work. This is a best support by far, what I tried and I love to work on it... makes all the difference in the world!..

"Picnic at Pinchot" By Debra Tritt Kreiger

Acrylic Painting on canvas 10"x8"

This painting was started plein air and finished in my studio. The Susquehanna Valley Plein Air painters hosted painting and a picnic at Pinchot Park this year. It was a bit breezy and cool and I was really happy when the sun came out. Sue made some wonderful coffee and we all shared some great food! Artist are also great cooks!

This painting along with others can be seen at the Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters Exhibit at the Mechanicburg Art Center December 10th - January 13. Reception Saturday Dec 10 from 1 to 3pm.

Here are two recent portraits, one of my sister Leah and one of my brother Joel.   There is always a little more you could do in a portrait of someone you know...a little more to the nose, to the ear, the eyes- but I try and stop once I feel that the person is there rather than just brushstrokes.  Hmmm...maybe the lips.

Day 100

What an adventure this has been...I have had so much fun,
and in the process of this challenge have also learned
so much more about painting.  I feel a sense of accomplishment
having finished this, but also a little sad that it has come to an end.

I want to thank all of the people who have so faithfully
followed this challenge, and have offered such encouragement
along the way!

Thanks also to the people who have given me reference
material from their own back yards that I could paint!

Special thanks to my beautiful daughter who gave me the
extra push I needed to go ahead and start the challenge even
though I wasn't sure I was ready, and who
also helped me come up with the idea for the final painting
of the challenge...of myself painting in my back yard.

I am working on another challenge that I want to start
next year...more information to follow!!!

Mark H Brown - New landscape of the Gulf Coast Florida

I've been doing a bunch of still life paintings, but haven't posted them yet.  I hope to soon.  Here is a landscape I just finished.  After a break from landscape painting, I've returned to this genre for my Florida tour coming up soon.  This is a painting of the gulf coast at Naples, on a windy and dramatic evening.  I loved the light!

Barrels Watercolor by Kathy Michels

I took advantage of those sunny days last week to get some photos in the local area. It seems like there are so many beautiful things that we miss each day - that is until we start snapping those pics. Then it is really amazing to see what is just minutes from home. I had fun painting these barrels for a little practice this week. Each and every painting is always an adventure. I learn so much from each one.

Summer's Bounty by Donna Berk Barlup

I used this old metal bucket to pick tomatoes and peppers just picked from the garden.  They were sitting on the kitchen counter.  I had to take photographs for paintings before I made them into yummy tomato sauce.

Ballet in Blue by Barbara Durbin

I learned today that my watercolor Ballet in Blue was awarded Honorable Mention in the York Art Association's Figurative Works Exhibit. I'm very excited about this award, which is my first, and have to give a shout out to Kathy Michels who continues to support my painting growth and keeps me focused about entering exhibits!
The young lady was a joy to paint and has such beauty that I hope I did her justice.

Deb Watson - Flowers II

The New Painting Materials Journey Continues

This is my second attempt at watercolor flowers with the paper stretched on canvas bars like an oil painting. For this one, I used a different spray varnish finish. It didn't dull the colors as much as the brushed on varnish, but its just a big glossy and that makes it difficult to photograph! I've ordered yet another spray varnish for watercolor and will post the next one, too.

Hey, Kid! - Dianne Lorden

This is a watercolor pencil for the most part, with some colored pencil in the grass and on the fence boards. The goat youngster (who's grown up by now, as I took the photo a couple of years ago) lives on the grounds of a Pennsy/Dutch-style restaurant in the Lancaster area.
I'm still experimenting with the watercolor pencils and just completed this today. This will be one of six of my paintings on display, and for sale, during the Gettysburg Festival's Gingerbread House Reception and contest during the first weekend of December. It will be held in the Adams County Arts Council's new Arts Education Center on Washington St., Gettysburg.

Back of Home, 36 x 60, Ron Donoughe

Finished version, Back of Home, 36 x 60 inches

Study for Back of Home, 9 x 14 inches

This group of houses is on Home Street - such a great name for a street. Actually this view is from the back. The alley ways and backyards have become a rich source of inspiration lately. I'm influenced by the Ashcan School of painting and especially the NY tenements that John Sloan painted in the early 1900s. I also find it interesting that a guy from Lock Haven, PA became the visual voice of New York City.

Santa Demonstration, Maria Kovalenko Leysens

Ok, so last week I started a Santa demonstration and ended up painting the inspiration image of a man with a red beard. This week I followed my lesson plan and modified the image to be more Santa like. Everyone in class was in the best mood.... I think Santa makes us happy.

BURNSIDE BRIDGE
Antietam National Battlefield
Original Plein Air Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Burnside Bridge'

Oil
8 x 16

This is one of the plein air paintings that are currently in the
'Hallowed Ground - En Plein Air' exhibit until
November 27th at the Delaplaine Center in Frederick, MD.

It was such a hot, humid day when I was there painting at
Antietam, and also a day when millions of gnats were
out in full force.  The funny thing is that when you are really
into your painting, the heat and bugs just seem to
disappear...until you come back to the real world!

"Moving Toward the Light" by Taryn Day

oil on panel
7"x 7"

The light in this parking lot at the Wissahickon Valley Park was stunning.  I could have titled this "Young Woman with Poise Walking and Two Children Goofing Around", but the way they move toward the sharp afternoon sunlight is the real subject.

This was a challenge.  I have not painted from photographs of people in silhouette before, and I wasn't sure I could make it work.  I'm glad I tried- every painting teaches me something.
